You’ve probably done it while on the road: held your breath while going through a tunnel, and not letting it out until you’re back in the sunshine.
It turns out that game can have devastating consequences.
Daniel J. Calhon learned that lesson Sunday afternoon, losing consciousness — and control of his Toyota Camry — as he drove through an Oregon tunnel.
The 19-year-old told investigators that he had been holding in breath through the tunnel when he fainted, the Associated Press reported.
His Camry drifted across the center line, smashing head-on into a Ford Explorer, bouncing against the tunnel walls and then being struck by a pickup truck.
Four people were injured in the pileup, but none of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening.
According to the AP, Calhon was cited for reckless driving, three counts of reckless endangerment and fourth-degree assault.
