Norwegian artist Alexander Selvik Wengshoel reportedly cooked and consumed his own hip as part of a long-term art project.

He told Norwegian outlet The Local that his meat tasted “like wild sheep” — which may be the Norwegian equivalent of “tastes like chicken” — and went well with potato gratin and a glass of wine.

How did he have access to his hip meat?

He was born with a hip deformity, and at 21 underwent a hip replacement operation — which he filmed as part of the art project — and convinced doctors to let him keep his old hip after the operation.

“I just wanted to use (the hip) in my art,” Wengshoel said. ”I didn’t know at that time that I would boil it and eat it, but it just came really naturally.”

The hip is now on display at the Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art as part of Wengshoel’s graduation exhibition.

“I had to boil off the meat to get to the bone,” Wengshoel said, “and when I started scraping off the meat, I took off a little piece and I thought, ‘why not do it. It’s not every day I will have a piece of human flesh which is mine and which it is possible to eat’, so I had a little taste, and then I thought, ‘that’s really nice.’”

Wengshoel acknowledged that some may find his tale of auto-cannibalism to be unbelievable.
