Led from a New York courthouse on Thursday, a handcuffed 60-year-old man accused of using his vehicle to kill a state trooper offered an eye-opening alibi for what happened earlier in the day on Interstate 81.

“I was two miles away from the Connecticut border, and all of a sudden I’m in Binghamton, New York, being beamed to New York,” Almond Upton said in front of news cameras.

“The cop that got killed, I don’t know how it happened, there had to be a time warp,” the Melrose, Florida, man added to the gathered crowd as police led him away. “Honestly, I’m not bulls***ing. I have proof in Connecticut. It’s a time warp or something had to happen.”

Prosecutors said Upton told them he hit state trooper Christopher Skinner intentionally, WHWK-FM reported. Police said Upton used a 2014 white Toyota pickup around noon to hit Skinner, killing him instantly. Almond is charged with first-degree murder.

As Upton entered the Chenango, New York, courtroom for his arraignment, WBNG-TV reported, Upton said he didn’t know why he hit Skinner.

More from WHWK:

After driving about a mile just north of exit 6, Upton reportedly saw Trooper Skinner conducting a traffic stop and drove from the passing lane into the driving lane and intentionally hit the 13-year veteran of the State Police.

After Upton’s vehicle traveled a short distance off the road, he ran into the woods where police K9 and helicopter located him and he was taken into custody about an hour after the Trooper was killed. Upton has been placed in the Broome County Jail with no bail.

Upton is also accused of hitting two cars on the interstate before hitting Skinner; one driver sustained minor injuries, police said. Upton didn’t appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, WHWK noted, citing police.

Upton’s next-door neighbor in Florida, Michelle Weeks, told WBNG that Upton — who has a wife and son — is dramatic, but a nice man overall.

Skinner, from Binghamton, was 42 and had a fiancee and two children, 15 and 12, state police said.
