A Minneapolis police officer deployed a taser on a pregnant woman Thursday evening, according to two individuals who witnessed the entire incident.
Krystal Gonzalez and Duta Sully told KMSP-TV that they were waiting for a ride by a Metro station when an altercation broke out between Latrice Trotter, 19, and another woman. A police officer soon arrived on the scene after the situation escalated when the other woman slapped the 19-year-old.
When the officer tried to get in between the two women to break up a potential fight, Trotter attempted to get around him. That’s when the officer used his taser on her, according to the two witnesses.
“She just like, straightened out — like planked — and fell straight on her belly,” Sully told KMSP, adding that she had previously shouted, “I’m pregnant! I’m pregnant!”
That’s when Sully started recording the aftermath.
“Oh snap — this is not okay, and I pulled out my phone,” she said, later asking, “Why didn’t [police] pepper spray the pregnant lady or put her in a hold or something?”
The footage shows a chaotic scene, with multiple individuals screaming at the officer for his actions.
“She’s pregnant! She’s f***ing pregnant!” one individual shouted.
Minneapolis police said in a statement to KMSP that they are now investigating the incident.
“We are investigating and take every allegation of misconduct seriously. Any deployment of a Taser initiates a force of use evaluation, and we are unable to comment at this time,” the statement said.
Police declined to identify the involved officer, but an incident report names officers Adam Lewis and Michael Williams. Metro also declined to release the surveillance video, citing an ongoing police investigation.
Attempts made by KMSP to contact Trotter were not successful, but Sully says if the unborn child was harmed, they now have “proof to show something did happen.”
