Martin Luther King’s Niece Shares the Moving Reason She and Her Siblings Were ‘Never Afraid’ as Children

Alveda King, the niece of Marthin Luther King Jr. and the author of “King Rules: Ten Truths for You, Your Family, and Our Nation to Prosper,” had a historically tumultuous upbringing. But she said Tuesday that the children in her family were never afraid for one reason: they saw their parents praying.

King, appearing on The Glenn Beck Program, was speaking about some of the most memorable conversations she has had with Glenn Beck. One that stuck out to her was: “Leave your bedroom door open and let your children walk by, and see the husband and wife on their knees praying aloud to God.”

King said her father and mother used to do just that, and that’s why she and her siblings were “never afraid.”

“No matter how bad things get, if [the children] see that, they’re OK,” she said. “Somebody might threaten your daddy or they might be concerned when you go to work … but they know you’re praying and they’re going to be OK.”

King’s father and uncle both died prematurely amid their struggle for civil rights. In the years since, the King family has grown apart in some ways, espousing different political beliefs. But King said one of the most important things any of us can come back to and nurture is our own family.

“No matter what the conflict is, come back to 1 Corinthians 13. Love never fails,” she said. “Call a ceasefire, no matter where you are today. If it’s race relations, family relations, marital relations, domestic – ceasefire, come back to love.”
