Comedian Lily Tomlin, a noted feminist, critiqued famed singer Beyonce in a recent interview with an LGBT outlet, noting that she believes the singer is “selling sex … to teeny-boppers.”
Her comments came after PrideSource reporter Chris Azzopardi asked what Tomlin, 74, thinks of Beyonce as a “modern example of feminism.”
“You mean Beyonce’s total use of her body? Is that what you mean?,” Tomlin asked.
Azzopardi went on to clarify that some see the singer “as a feminist, as somebody who embraces herself as a powerful woman” and asked for the actress’ thoughts on the matter.
“Yeah, well, I think that’s great, and what can I say? She is a pretty popular woman and she’s married to a very powerful man, but she’s still selling sex,” Tomlin responded. “She’s selling a lot of sex to teeny-boppers. I don’t know. Who are her fans? Everybody?”
Azzopardi then joked about “Saturday Night Live’s” “The Beygency,” a fake agency that goes after anyone who doesn’t like Beyonce. Tomlin said that she likes the singer, but continued her critique.
“Oh, s***. I like her! I don’t dislike her! But I don’t pay any attention to that because — I mean, she’s fantastically beautiful and dances, but, you know, it’s very suggestive,” she continued. “If I was a 10-year-old, I would try to emulate her like most 10-year-olds do.”
Tomlin added that she believes young girls are “too sexually available” and commented that contemporary culture is too sexualized. She shared a story of seeing a 4 year old watch a sexual dance on television. The child then said, “Oh, she’s hot,” which stunned Tomlin.
“I’m thinking, this is a 4-year-old!,” she added.
As far as her Beyonce critique goes, she joked that it could come back to haunt her, specifically citing fears over an attack at the hands of Solange, Beyonce’s sister.
“The whole Beyonce thing is gonna come after me. They’ll send Solange after me,” Tomlin quipped. “I’ll be in the elevator and they’ll beat the hell out of me.”
