Dave Brat, who defeated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a stunning upset on Tuesday, told Glenn Beck on Wednesday he believes he won the GOP primary for several reasons, namely, standing for “common sense” over politics.
“I made it very clear to the press, this is not about right and further right or any of that,” Brat said on Beck’s radio program. “Free markets is not at liberal or conservative issue. The rule of law is not a right or left issue. Those are American principles since our founding, and to the extent that other countries follow our lead … they will prosper. That’s what I want, because every one of those people is a child of God.”
“We are the compassionate party,” Brat continued. “China and India are feeding their people for the first time in human history due to free markets, and the left knows that, and it gets them nervous.”
Brat said the American people are craving leadership that will speak about the “virtuous nature of free markets,” and how they are the only known “engine” that could provide for 7 billion people.
“People feel that they are not being represented,” Brat said, “and that’s the major context of what happened. ”
Brat was also quick to credit all those who campaigned on his behalf, from conservative radio host Laura Ingraham to TheBlaze Radio’s Doc Thompson and Skip LaCombe, who were among his first supporters in the media. Brat also thanked the people who knocked on doors and made phone calls “eight hours a day.”
“I owe them,” Brat told Thompson on TheBlaze Radio Wednesday morning. “I hope I’m thanking the people in every comment I make. I did not win this race. The people that walked and knocked on doors, I got people making phone calls eight hours a day for me, they’re the true patriots.”
