Flashbacks: Obama and Biden Laud Iraq’s Stability

As Islamic militants seize more territory and advance farther into Iraq, here are three flashbacks to when President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden touted the “sovereign, stable and self-reliant” country the U.S. was leaving behind:

• 2010: Biden on CNN with Larry King: “I think it’s going to be one of the great achievements of this administration.”

• 2011: Obama to troops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina: “We’re leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq.”

• 2012: During his re-election campaign, Obama regularly referred to decimating Al Qaeda’s leadership, killing Osama bin Laden, and bringing the Iraq War to an end.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a frequent critic of Obama’s Iraq policy and his decision to withdraw U.S. troops, took to the Senate floor Thursday as the chaotic situation became more clear.

“We need a new team that knows what America’s national security interests are, and are more interested in national security than they are in politics,” McCain said. “If I sound angry, it’s because I am angry.”
