Police might be prepared to face a combative human when they pull someone over for a traffic violation, but a Florida officer was attacked by group of canines instead.
The incident caught on the cruiser’s dash camera shows Joe Calderone, an officer with the Stuart Police Department, pulling over a woman for speeding Thursday. Calderon told WFLX-TV he couldn’t quite hear the woman, so she stepped out of the truck, which is when three dogs jumped over her out of the vehicle as well.
“It just happened so quick,” he told the news station.
Calderone then ran from the animals to the other side of his cruiser to”get some distance in between, so I didn’t keep getting bit.”
Watch the attack in WFLX-TV’s report:
Calderone was treated for puncture wounds and received a tetanus shot after the incident. He told the news station he thinks the dogs were trying to protect their owner.
The woman was cited by animal control for the canines’ actions.
All in all, Calderone was glad he got away and didn’t have to take action against the animals.
“Nobody wants to shoot a dog, especially with their owner right there. Luckily, I didn’t have to,” he said.
Officer Brian Bossio though said the video is a lesson for officers to remain alert and for owners to inform authorities of a possibly aggressive animal right away.
“Let us know right off the bat, roll down your window, and tell us that,” Bossio told WFLX.
