An 8-month-old baby was found safe Monday morning after being kidnapped during a car theft that occurred at a Houston gas station around 1 a.m.
It was a jogger who found Genesis Haley just before 8 a.m. hidden in the bushes along the road with ants crawling on her.
“I see the baby moving in the car seat so I called 911. I stayed with the baby,” Hong Nguyen told KTRK-TV.
Nguyen said it was by chance she turned left and ended up finding the baby on her run.
“It was my duty as a human being,” she told the news station of her actions Monday morning.
According to Houston police, Genesis’ mother briefly left her sleeping daughter in the car to enter a gas station convenience store. That’s when a suspect, described as a a black male in his late teens to early 20s, took off with her car, the keys still in the ignition.
Nguyen didn’t realize the baby she found was kidnapped at first but thought she was only abandoned, KPRC-TV reported.
“I was very worried. It was scary,” she said.
Genesis was taken to Texas Children’s hospital for evaluation wrapped in a police uniform for warmth. Once physicians determined she was well, Genesis was given back to her mother.

The stolen car was found at an apartment complex but without the suspect or the baby prior to Genesis being found.
Though the baby is safe at home, the suspect still remains at large.
