Last Wednesday, a babysitter in Ferndale, Washington, allegedly did something awful: she faked a home invasion to rob the family that had hired her.
She might have gotten away with it, too, if not for one outspoken little girl.
The 17-year-old babysitter of 4-year-old Abby reportedly arranged a fake break-in with her 16-year-old boyfriend and another male suspect, KCPQ-TV reported. and then told police that two armed black men had broken into the home.
“They told us to get out of the house cause they wanted to steal stuff,” Abby said.
But Abby was bright enough to realize that “they” were not black, but white — and that’s what helped police unravel the story.
The family’s neighbor, Cody Oaks, was taken into custody and questioned because he fit the description supplied by the babysitter, but police let him go after Abby pointed out “it wasn’t the right skin color.”
Oaks said he’s grateful to the little girl, and he mentioned the tense moment when a police sniper faced him down in his yard.
“It’s kind of sad because I don’t think [the babysitter] realizes the dangerous situation she put me in,” Oaks said.
Abby said the home invaders stole her kitty bank, her iPod, her Xbox and her Wii, and that she realized the invaders were the babysitter’s doing.
“That was really her being bad,” Abby said. “She’s not a good babysitter.”
The family’s stolen belongings were recovered, and Abby seemed happy to take the credit.
“They got it back because of me being the superhero,” she said.
The babysitter and her alleged accomplices were arrested, KCPQ-TV reported, and they could face robbery, burglary and perjury charges.
