For two weeks the Clintons have been doubling down on how they are in touch with regular Americans and defending Hillary Clinton’s “dead broke” comment. But on Wednesday, former President Bill Clinton talked about buying 14 Swiss watches that are listed at $550 each.
At a Denver meting of the Clinton Global Initiative Wednesday, a moderator was making the point about the power of Clinton’s endorsement and asked the former president about a visit he made to Shinola Detroit, which sells the “high class” watches.
The moderator jokingly said, “I don’t know how many you bought, Mr. President — 20, 30 of these watches? Whatever it was.”
“My group did. I bought 14 of them that month,” Clinton said, according to the Daily Caller.
“Oh, you really did?” the moderator responded.
“Yeah, in two different runs,” Clinton said. “I bought five at Christmas and nine when I was there, and I just give ‘em away and hope I make you more customers.”
The moderator replied, “I had no idea, I thought I was just pulling his leg.”
Bill Clinton made the visit to the watchmaker in April, according to Crain’s.
Crain’s reported that the former president’s watch of choice was the Shinola 47mm Runwell, which costs $550.
Clinton reportedly already owned two, but bought the others as gifts.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in one interview that she and her husband left the White House in 2001 “dead broke.” This week, she said they were not like the “truly well off.” Bill Clinton asserted that their wealth has not made the family out of touch.
