During his Sunday appearance on “Meet the Press,” former president Bill Clinton defended his wife’s handling of the Benghazi debacle by essentially called Republicans hypocrites.
Host David Gregory noted that Republicans, including Kentucky senator and possible presidential contender Rand Paul, have claimed the Benghazi scandal should “disqualify” Hillary Clinton from running for president.
Bill Clinton retorted that president George W. Bush’s tenure had seem some mistakes too.
“When ten different instances occurred when President Bush was in office where American diplomatic personnel were killed around the world, how many outraged Repulbican members of Congress were there?” Clinton asked. “Zero.”
Gregory also asked whether former vice president Dick Cheney is a “credible critic” of president Barack Obama’s foreign policy, prompting laughter from the audience and a chuckle from Clinton.
He avoided directly answering the question right off the bat, instead saying, “I believe, you know, if they hadn’t gone to war in Iraq none of this [Islamist extremist takeover of northern Iraq] would be happening.”
