A group of concerned Florida residents heard a strange noise emitting from a storm drain — one that had them immediately summoning authorities to the scene.
According to a firefighter, the Jacksonville residents heard a duckling in distress stuck in a drain.
“Got the call,” the firefighter told WTEV-TV. “These fine neighbors out here saw the duck, or heard the duck, in the drain.”
The team of rescue professionals tried several methods to extract the baby duck from the pipe, including using the iPhone’s duck ringtone as an attempt to lure the animal toward them. Everything failed.
“We tried to get a pole to him, but the pole was too long to fit down in there,” a firefighter told WTEV. “We just don’t have the tools for saving ducks.”
Eventually, the rescue team decided to flush the duckling out of the pipe using a hose while waiting at the other end of the pipe. After two tanks of water, about 6,000 gallons, the baby duck was freed.
“Hey little guy! See he was totally worth it,” one of the neighbors told WTEV.
“He just kept fighting the current and it just overcame him I guess,” added a firefighter.
The duck was then released to a nearby pond where its mother was waiting nearby for a reunion.
“She’s taking her back [inaudible]. She flew across,” an individual who witnessed the scene told WTEV.
