The clerk at a Shell gas station in Michigan might have followed an armed robber’s commands, but surveillance video released from police shows he wasn’t going to let the thief escape without at least trying to stop him.

Footage of the masked suspect, who was reported to have a firearm, shows him demanding money from the 24-year-old clerk Monday morning in North Shores, Michigan. The clerk helped put money into the bag as ordered, but when the suspect demanded cigarettes, the clerk went into the back room and retrieved his own gun, Norton Shores Police Department’s news release stated.

The clerk fired 10 rounds, but it is unknown if the suspect was hit as he ran to a black or dark blue, four-door sedan waiting outside.

Watch footage of the incident:

The clerk described the suspect as a black male about 6-feet tall with a thin but muscular build. There was another suspect driving the getaway car who could not be described.
