Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer called the United Nations the chief source of lies about the state of Israel.
“It is this astonishment and refusal to accept the realities of the uniqueness and the magnificence and the importance of this Jewish state that leads to all the mystery you’re hearing and all the lies you see on television and on the media about the calumnies that you hear against Israel, issued in the four corners of the globe, particular in the headquarters of the libel against the Jewish people, the United Nations,” Krauthammer told conference attendees at the Christians United for Israel summit in Washington on Monday.
A U.N. agency last week found 20 rockets hidden in one its school in Gaza, which it’s been accused of returning to Hamas, as reported by the Times of Israel and other media outlets. Israel launched its latest offensive in response to the barrage of rockets being fired from Gaza into Israel.
“The U.N. after a day of delay was forced to admit that it found 20 rockets in one of its own Gaza schools,” Krauthammer said. “Why didn’t they want to admit it? Because we know that Hamas deliberately places rockets, deliberately places launchers, deliberately places weapons in schools, hospitals, mosques and private houses so that when Israel has to defend itself, the only way it can is to go after these weapons of terror and death, civilians will inevitably be harmed.”
Secretary of State John Kerry announced he would be traveling to the region negotiate a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Last week, Israel accepted a cease-fire deal offered by Egypt, but Hamas rejected it.
“They long not just for dead Jews, they long for dead Palestinians so that can be shown to the world in sympathy,” Krauthammer said. “That is the most cynical, the most depraved form of warfare imaginable. They practice it and we are seeing it before our eyes. The one thing the U.N. hasn’t done as it should do is to condemn Hamas in Gaza for their use of human shields.”
Krauthammer, a conservative columnist for the Washington Post and commentator for Fox News, credited Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin (Ill.) and Barbara Boxer (Calif.) for sponsoring legislation calling for the U.N. to condemn Hamas’ use of human shields.
Krauthammer pointed out that the U.N.’s motto comes from Isaiah 2:4, “They will beat their swords into plowshares.” He said Hamas is doing the opposite.
Referring to the U.N. returning the rockets, Krauthammer said, “This is the one great hope that FDR after the second world war said could unite humanity.”
Krauthammer was also critical of striking a deal with Iran.
“Do you know when these expanded negotiations go until? Two weeks after the election. Coincidence? Nov. 24,” he said.
“The future of Israel hangs on this. The future of Zionism hangs on this. The future of the Jewish people hangs on this,” Krauthammer said. “A nuclear weapon in the hands of Iran means that Israel will live under the threat of extinction 10 minutes and forever.”
He said the negotiations “will give them the right to enrichment and will leave them with the implements of enrichment to develop a nuclear weapon in a few months and to hang that over the heads of the Jews from now until the end of time.”
He added, “Apart from the fact it would create a nuclear arms race in the region, people who have no great sympathy for the Jews, and they will inevitably fall into the hands of ISIS and other kinds of terrorists.”
