Actor Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cam on the popular sitcom “Modern Family,” revealed this week that he recently refused to take a picture with Rick Santorum due to the conservative politico’s public opposition to gay marriage.

Stonestreet, whose character is gay, told HuffPo Live Wednesday that he is often shocked when certain people ask to take pictures with him, noting that Santorum is just one example.

The actor said that the former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate approached him and asked for a photograph at the pre-party for the White House Correspondents Dinner in May.

But Stonestreet said he simply couldn’t bring himself to do it.

“It was at a time when he was publicly saying, you know, ‘Gay marriage, gay marriage’ and I’m like, ‘You know, I can’t do it,’” Stonestreet explained. “It was with him and his kids or something like that, and I said, ‘I’d be happy to take a picture with the kids,’ but I can’t just be in a picture with [him].”

While Stonestreet said he didn’t want to overstate the impact “Modern Family” is having on society, he believes that he and fellow actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays his husband Mitch on the show, “are normalizing what it is to be a same-sex couple.”
