Two women are lucky to be alive after they escaped certain death by mere inches — literally.
The women were apparently trespassing on a railroad-owned bridge in Monroe County, Indiana, earlier this month when they realized a train was speeding in their direction. They had nowhere to go as the bridge was seemingly too high to jump from.
The train inevitably went over the women and the conductor later revealed that he thought they were dead. He called the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department to report the incident and investigators were able to figure out what happened.
Luckily, the panicked women eventually laid down on the tracks in a last-ditch effort to survive. They reportedly had roughly 9 inches separating themselves from the moving train that passed right over them.

Tom Hoback, a spokesman with the Indiana Railroad Company, told WXIN-TV that the “human, environmental and financial toll” could have been “enormous.”
“In this case, not only did two trespassers narrowly escape a horrible death, but had the heavy train derailed due to the emergency brake application—which isn’t uncommon—it could have taken down the bridge, possibly killing the engineer as well,” he added.
Law enforcement officials have since identified the women seen in the stunning video and are considering a criminal case.
