A Texas mother has hired an attorney and filed a grievance after she learned that her first-grade daughter was forced to spend weeks sitting on the ground as punishment for drawing on her desk.

According to KHOU-TV, the unidentified mother said she was emailed by her daughter’s teacher after her child drew a doodle on her desk.

“She lost her recess, she went to the principal’s office and then she had to wash the desk and that was it,” she said. “I was never told that her desk was removed.”

But, the day after the incident, the daughter arrived at school only to find that her desk had been taken away, KHOU reported. The first-grader said she was instead forced to sit on the ground with a clipboard and told she wouldn’t get her desk back until the second grade.

For four weeks the student said she sat on the floor — all while other students sat on chairs at their desks.

“I asked her why did you not tell me and she said I was too scared to tell you mama,” the mother told KHOU. “She thought what she had done was so bad she didn’t deserve to have a desk.”

The incident, which took place at Westwood Elementary School in Houston, was investigated by the Spring Branch Independent School District. The district told KHOU that the teacher was reprimanded.

“The family has been offered multiple opportunities to transfer their child, either to another teacher within the school or to any elementary school in the district where enrollment is not capped,” the district said in a statement.

“I mean it’s like a primal instinct that you feel to protect your child.”

The mother ultimately withdrew her daughter from the school, but technicalities made it impossible for her son to also transfer.

“I mean it’s like a primal instinct that you feel to protect your child,” the mother told KHOU. “The fact that I sent her there every day not knowing that that’s what she was going into because nobody made me aware, it’s horrible.”

A complaint has since been filed by the mother who says she wants to make sure something similar doesn’t happen to any other child.
