Members of the House were visibly and audibly disturbed late Thursday after being told their August recess would be delayed indefinitely in order to let members finish work on a border bill.
House Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) told members that they would not be going home Thursday night, because GOP leaders were scrambling to work out a plan to pass a border bill.
“I want to advise all members that additional votes are possible today,” McCarthy said. “We will send out information as soon as it’s possible.”
When asked when he would know more, McCarthy said more information would be released “late this afternoon,” prompting groans and boos that appeared to come mostly from the Democratic side.
Later in the day, Republicans revealed that they would return Friday morning, but possibly keep members on-call throughout August in order to work on border legislation.
