A 42-year-old Georgia woman was out for a jog on a popular trail earlier this week when she was so brutally attacked that even her husband couldn’t recognize her at first.

“When I first saw her … the emotions came out, because that’s not my wife,” Jim Waddell, the husband of Tina Waddell, told WGCL-TV of the woman who had nearly all the bones in her face broken.

The Paulding County Sheriff’s Department said on Facebook that Tina Waddell was attacked on the Silver Comet Trail in Dallas, Georgia, Tuesday. According to the authorities, she was spotted on the side of the trail in the early evening by a bicyclist. Emergency crews stabilized the woman, who was barely maintaining consciousness at the time, and air lifted her to the hospital.

The bicyclist was identified by WGCL as Peter Skott, who said he wouldn’t forget what he saw “for a long time.”

“Thank God for a great man who happened to call 911 when he found her,” Jim Waddell told the news station.

According to their preliminary investigation, Tina Waddell was not sexually assaulted in the attack and is believed to have been taken off the trail into the woods by her attacker. She is then thought to have crawled back toward the trail where she was seen.

“As of now, detectives are trying to determine what the motive for this attack was,” the department wrote Tuesday.

By Thursday, the Atlanta Constitution Journal reported that law enforcement learned a phone was taken from Tina Waddell, which leads them to believe a robbery might have spurred the attack. A suspect has still not been identified.

“Why did somebody murder Jennifer Ewing?” Jim Waddell said told the newspaper of a murder that took place on the same trail in 2006 when asked why he thought his wife was targeted. “There’s always going to be the one that comes around and says this is his world and he’s going to do what he wants to do. Monsters like this don’t deserve to be living on this world.”
