A Brazilian husband and wife, who have been married for seven years, share a similar history in that they were both abandoned by their mothers. Recently on a Brazilian radio show, the couple, who have a 6-year-old daughter together, got the type of news that’s usually revealed in a soap opera: They are apparently brother and sister.
According to a report by Radio Globo’s program “The Time Is Now” (via an unofficial translation), the wife, who the show called “Adriana,” protecting her and her family’s real names, was searching for her birth mother, Maria.
The show’s “Angel of Meetings” series, created by Walter Peceniski, who Radio Globo reported has a specialty in finding missing persons, reunited the woman and her mother on the phone over the air.
“Mother, you had other children besides me?” Adriana asked on the show at one point, according to Radio Globo.
“Yes,” the mother said, saying she named him “Leandro,” which is the name of Adriana’s husband.
“I do not believe you’re telling me this. Leandro is my husband,” Adriana said, crying and distraught.
Maria told Adriana that her son was fathered by a different man, according to Radio Globo. If true, this would make the husband and wife also half brother and sister.
Later the show reported that Adriana revealed it previously crossed her mind that she could be related to Leandro because Maria was also listed as the name of his mother on his birth certificate.
Radio Globo reported that given the couple’s supposed genetic relationship as brother and sister, their marriage would not be valid under Brazilian law. But the couple was never legally married, they just considered themselves committed in a marriage-like relationship.
According to the Independent in the U.K., Adriana said she and her husband intend on remaining in a romantic, committed relationship despite what “anyone might think.”
“We have so many plans together. Nothing is going to break us up. Nothing,” she said.
