Jackie Sheaks told WBNS-TV that she took the photo as a joke, but said it quickly spiraled out of the control.

“We’re not horrible people that they are making us out to me,” she told the local news outlet.

“It started as just a joke; we put a little tape on the pacifier because we were being silly,” Sheaks added to WBNS. “We wanted to share it with friends because everybody that knows us, knows we play around like that.”

The photo was apparently inspired by others she had seen on the Internet depicting babies posing as flowers or resting in mixing bowls.

Despite her intention, the picture triggered backlash on social media.

The local sheriff and Child Protective Services ultimately visited her home to check on the well-being of the child, but charges had not been filed at the time of publication.

“Oh, it’s definitely taught me a lesson: what we think is funny, other people don’t — it will never happen again,” Sheaks said. “It’s definitely taught us a lesson.”

According to WBNS, the child’s mother was okay with the photos.
