An Oregon man is alleging that at an employee at an Apple Store in Portland, Oregon, recently printed an anti-gay slur on his receipt.
Adam Gregory Catanzarite, who identifies as “queer,” posted a message to his Facebook page August 12, revealing the receipt and claiming that he found the message on it incredibly offensive.
In the area where a customer’s email would typically appear, the characters “firstname.lastname@example.org” are shown, according to the Oregonian.
“So here’s a thing. I got called a f@g by an #Apple employee here in #Portland. The store manager did not do what he said he would to rectify the situation, so now I feel it is important to share the story,” Catanzarite wrote. “Being queer and having worked with queer youth, I know first-hand that this is an example of the type of #homophobic beliefs and actions that lead young people to harm themselves.”
He went on to write that the employee’s alleged behavior was unacceptable, especially for Apple, a company that Catanzarite said “prides itself on being LGBTQ inclusive and welcoming.”
With his message came a photo of the purported receipt — dated July 8 — and a plea for his followers to share the alleged example of “homophobia” with their social media followers.
“I please ask that you like this status or share it with your networks to let them know that #homophobia does not have a place in PDX (or anywhere) and that you reconsider where you spend your money,” Catanzarite added. “Perhaps the #Applestore is not so deserving.”
In a separate post published Wednesday, he explained that the store manager gave him a gift card and offered to refund the $29 headphones he purchased, though he has not yet seen the money returned to his account.
Catanzarite also further addressed the unnamed employee who allegedly printed the offensive label.
“Due to the policies of the organization, I will not know the intent of the individual who put in email@example.com as my email address. It is possible that this could have been made in error, but the impact of the action remains the same,” he wrote. “The employee who entered firstname.lastname@example.org should not be fired (take a minute to let that settle in if you need to), but should be given an opportunity to learn about the impact of the use of the word fag and how these words impact the individuals who have been oppressed by them.”
Apple spokeswoman Michaela Wilkerson told the Oregonian that the company is aware of the allegation, but did not offer additional information.
