“To me, it says you’re not ready for primetime.”
That was ESPN Mark Schlereth’s reaction to what rookie Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel did during Monday night’s exhibition game against the Washington Redskins. Manziel’s offense? During the third quarter he flipped his middle finger at the Redskins bench after an incompletion.
Here’s uncensored video if you really want to see it:
Manziel was not flagged on the play. But that doesn’t mean he’ll go without punishment. As ESPN points out, he could be fined up to $11,025 by the league after it reviews the play. He could knock that down to close to $6,200 upon appeal, however.
As for the rookie, he seemed to brush it off — at one point even laughing about it with reporters.
“I felt like I did a good job of holding my composure throughout the night, and you have a lapse of judgment and slip up,” he said.
Still, Deadspin has a gif seemingly capturing the moment Manziel found out his gesture had been caught on camera.
His coach wasn’t pleased.
“It did not sit well,” Browns coach Mike Pettine responded. “I was informed of it after the game and it’s disappointing. Because what we talk about is being poised and being focused — that you have to be able to maintain your poise.”
“I should have been smarter,” Manziel added. “The cameras were solidly on me. I need to be smarter about that.”
