Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon on Thursday afternoon ordered the Missouri National Guard to begin a systematic withdrawal from Ferguson, saying their “limited mission” of protecting police facilities had been accomplished.
“As we continue to see improvement, I have ordered the Missouri National Guard to begin a systematic process of withdrawing from the City of Ferguson,” said Nixon in a statement released by his office.
Nixon ordered the Guard into Ferguson on Monday to protect the Unified Command Center which had apparently been the target of threats and a ”coordinated, planned attack” Sunday night.
The statement from Nixon’s office said the situation on the ground in Ferguson had “greatly improved” since then “with fewer incidents of outside instigators interfering with peaceful protestors, and fewer acts of violence.”
