When a man reportedly cardiac arrested and flat-lined during a church service Sunday, emergency workers rushed to give him CPR. As they worked, Dr. E. Dewey Smith, who was preaching from the pulpit at the time, took his pleas to the Lord.
What happened next have both the pastor and his congregation claiming that God granted a miracle.
While paramedics worked to revive the unnamed individual, who was apparently unconscious for 15 minutes, Smith called the entire church to turn in the man’s direction and to pray for healing, according to WGCL-TV.
“I just felt led to pray. I didn’t know what else to do,” Smith, pastor of House of Hope Church in Decatur, Georgia, told the outlet. “I felt it was a critical situation so I just wanted to pray and I do believe in the power of prayer.”
It is that prayer that some believe helped save the man’s life.
In a video posted to YouTube, Smith can be seen continuing to preach with a calm demeanor as emergency worker helped the man. He asked parishioners to join him in praying that the individual’s life would be saved and that his heart would start beating again.
“This individual is in critical condition … he is fighting for his life right now … he’s in a sanctuary right now fighting for his life,” Smith said from the pulpit. “I want you right now, I want you to get on your feet, I want you to turn your hands in this direction while, as we speak, performing CPR … as they’re pumping his heart, I don’t need you looking, I need you praying.”
And then, at some point after the prayer started, the man reportedly regained a pulse. The congregation danced and rejoiced when they felt their prayers had been answered.
“You could feel the power in the room. You could feel the Holy Spirit in the room,” church member Christina Hairston said. “When the man came back to life that was just a moment of victory for us.”

There are some, of course, who will argue that it was the emergency workers’ efforts and not the prayer that saved the man’s life.
But some witnesses say that another factor leads them to believe that the Almighty had a hand in all that unfolded. They claim that paramedics were already on the scene for an unrelated incident that ended up being a false alarm and that they hadn’t yet left when the man collapsed.
And it was because they stayed to listen to Smith’s message that paramedics were able to quickly work on the collapsed victim, WGCL-TV reported.
