For two and a half decades, the TV show “Cops” has given America a look at the dangerous world of police work.
Tuesday night in Omaha, one of the show’s crew members was fatally injured while filming a deadly incident that also cost the suspect his life.
The incident was an armed robbery at a Wendy’s in Omaha. While police confirmed to KETV-TV that the suspected robber was killed by police gunfire, information on how the crew member, Bryce Dion, was killed remained scarce Wednesday afternoon.
“We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragedy and our main concern is helping his family in any way we can,” Pam Golum, a spokeswoman for the production company behind “Cops,” said in a statement to the Washington Post. “Bryce Dion was a longterm member of the ‘Cops’ team and a very talented and dedicated person. We mourn his passing. An investigation is ongoing and we are cooperating with local authorities.”
Omaha police announced a new conference for later Wednesday afternoon. KMTV-TV will live-stream it here.
Update 4:00 p.m. ET: Omaha police on Wednesday afternoon said Dion was killed by police officers who opened fire to prevent an ongoing robbery, according to the Associated Press. Police said they did realize the suspect, who was also killed by police gunfire, was carrying an Airsoft gun capable of firing only plastic pellets.
All three officers involved in the shooting are on leave, according to the Associated Press.
