Leopards are responsible for several human deaths a year, but one decided to attack the wrong 56-year-old Indian woman earlier this week.
Kamla Devi from Uttarakhand fought for her life for 30 minutes with the leopard, ultimately overtaking it when she was able to reach a sickle and an ax.
“At first, I was terrified. But, then I gathered my courage to fight back. I promised myself that this is not my last day here,” Devi told the Hindustan Times.
The newspaper reported that the woman sustained serious injuries in Sunday’s attack and was hospitalized.
“She has two fractures on the right hand and one on the left. She also has deep injuries on her head and legs. There are bite marks all over her body,” Dr. Abdul Rahul said, according to BBC.
Rajesh Singh Uchholi, a community member, told India Today that Devi’s story “will inspire the hill women not to give up fight come what may.”
