For decades, the biggest advancement in plastic coolers was putting it on wheels. Sure, some other improvements might have followed, like a spigot at the bottom to drain out excess water without having to dump the bucket, but an Oregon-based inventor envisioned something so much more for the insulated plastic box.

And given his success on a crowd-funding site, thousands of other people who contributed to his project agreed as well, helping him set a new record in the process.

The “Coolest Cooler had an initial $10,000 funding goal on Kickstarter. With a little more than two days left to fund the project, the Coolest Cooler has brought in more than $10 million from more than 49,000 backers.

“On August 26, 2014, at around 10:00 PM EST, after 862 days, the Coolest Cooler took over Pebble’s spot as the most funded project in Kickstarter history,” Kickstarter wrote of the achievement on its blog.

Though the Coolest Cooler has a retro vibe in terms of its visual appeal, it packs a load of technology and other useful features. It boasts a blender, speakers, light cutting board, bottle opener and other handy gadgets.

“Nothing is more refreshing on a hot day than a cold blended cocktail or smoothie,” the cooler’s Kickstarter page said. “The 18 volt ice-crushing beast built into the COOLEST will power through more than 6 gallons of blended goodness on a single charge.”

While some of the electric components are nifty — the cooler actually lets you power up some of your own devices with its rechargeable battery — it takes on other practical design features as well. For example, it includes beach-ready wheels to easily plow through sandy slopes and has bungee straps so users can load on other gear and cart it around on the cooler as well.

On Kickstarter, Coolest inventor Ryan Grepper wrote that he created his own version of the high-tech cooler 10 years ago but last year reexamined his home invention, improved it and decided to try to bring it to the market.

Coolest costs $165 and first shipments will start in the first couple of months of 2015. Speaking with the Oregonian, Grepper said, after having a “celebratory margarita,” he’s going to need to hit the ground running in order to fulfill the thousands of orders in time.

“If you’re going to be consumed, how fortunate for it to be with your dream product and your dream project,” he said though.

As for the record-setting product, Grepper told the Oregonian he was “excited about what crowd-funding can do for inventors and creators.”
