Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) slammed Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) Wednesday night by likening his record on women’s rights to actual physical violence against women.
“Scott Walker has given women the back of his hand,” Wasserman Schultz said, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. ”I know that is stark. I know that is direct. But that is reality.”
The comments were made during a round table discussion at the Milwaukee Athletic Club and immediately met with criticism.
“I think the remarks were absolutely hideous and the motive behind them was despicable,” Republican Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch said, according to the Sentinel.
Kleefisch called on a Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke to “denounce these outrageous statements.”
While Burke did not issue a blunt denunciation, her press secretary said it’s “not the type of language” she would use, the Sentinel reported.
“There is plenty that she and Governor Walker disagree on — but those disagreements can and should be pointed out respectfully,” Burke’s press secretary said.
