Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) stunned many Thursday when she expressed support for gun control legislation by pointing to the supposed success of such laws in California.

“Sensible gun laws work,” Boxer told reporters. “We’ve proven it in California.”

The two San Bernardino attackers, who killed 14 and wounded more than a dozen Wednesday, purchased all four of their guns legally, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Thursday.

Boxer was immediately hammered on Twitter for the remark.

A spokesperson for Boxer told TheBlaze the senator made the remark after stressing that state-wide laws are “not enough” and “that is why we ned national laws.”

Boxer spoke on the Senate floor earlier and called for tighter gun control laws, saying she has “never heard one persuasive argument about why anyone else would need to have” a high powered rifle like those used in Wednesday’s shooting.

“These weapons of war. They just don’t belong on our streets and in our communities,” she said.
