The intense frontier saga “The Revenant” trounced competing films with 12 nominations. The AP noted that the acting categories this year were again filled entirely by white performers.

The strong support for “The Revenant,” including a Best Actor nomination for Leonardo DiCaprio, follows its success at the Golden Globes. The film’s director, Alejandro Inarritu, is set for a possible back-to-back win following his Best Picture winning “Birdman” last year.

George Miller’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” followed “The Revenant” with 10 nominations, including Best Picture. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic “The Martian” earned seven nominations, including Best Picture, but no Best Director nod for Scott.

The 88th Academy Awards show will air Sunday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC. Comedian Chris Rock will host this year’s ceremony.
