Six family members were found dead in an apparent domestic murder-suicide following an armed standoff with the Chesapeake Police Department Thursday morning.
The police department issued a statement saying that all six of the dead appear to be family members, although the police did not publicly release any names, according to the Associated Press. Neighbors, however, identified the dead as members of the Dooley family, a family that was allegedly quite prominent in the community and members of the Temple Baptist Church of Chesapeake, WVEC-TV reported.
The father, Todd Dooley, was reportedly a CPD officer.
The trouble began when officers from the Chesapeake Police Department were called to investigate a “barricade situation” and discovered one dead body at a Chesapeake residence, according to NBC News. After “further investigation,” the officers arrived at a nearby home and were joined by a SWAT team to begin negotiations with one armed person that lasted for “several hours,” according to the police. When the officers finally were able to enter the home, they discovered five more bodies, including that of the suspect.
At this time, it is not yet clear whether or not the additional family members were killed before or after the officers began their negotiation attempts with the armed suspect, NBC News reported.
