‘Don’t Smoke, Don’t Be Like Obama’ — Russian Anti-Smoking Ad Likens President to Mass Killer

President Barack Obama is the new face of a Russian anti-smoking campaign, but the world leader isn’t exactly portrayed in a flattering light.

The ad depicts Obama as some sort of mass killer.

Анекдоты с бородой — в жизнь. «У нас в СССР — свобода слова! Я тоже могу выйти на Красную площадь и сколько угодно ругат…

“Smoking kills more people than Obama, although he kills lots and lots of people,” the poster reads in Russian. “Don’t smoke, don’t be like Obama.”

The poster, which shows Obama holding a cigarette, is the most recent in a long-running stream of Russian anti-American propaganda.

Dmitry Gudkov, the only liberal opposition member of Russia’s Parliament, posted a photo of the ad on Facebook Tuesday after seeing it at a Moscow bus stop, the Guardian reported.

Gudkov called the propaganda poster “disgusting and embarrassing.” His post received more than 2,000 likes and almost 500 shares as of Thursday afternoon.

“Soon they’ll be scaring kids with Obama rather than Baba Yaga,” a witch from Russian folk tales, Gudkov told the Guardian.

The ad has no attribution, and an artist has yet to claim the piece.

It’s not the first time Obama has been used by Russians as a symbol of death and oppression. In January, a banner replaced the world “hope” in Obama’s iconic 2008 election poster with the world “killer.” It was hung from a residential building across from the U.S. embassy in Moscow. In February, video was broadcast on the sides of some buildings in Moscow demanding that Obama be judged by a Hague war crimes tribunal.
