Louis Farrakhan Says Nation of Islam Will Protect Beyoncé if Police Don’t

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan offered strong praise for Beyoncé’s controversial Super Bowl performance, offering the singer protection from the Fruit of Islam, the Nation of Islam’s male-only paramilitary wing, in lieu of police protection.

“She started talking that black stuff and white folks said, ‘We don’t know how to deal with that.’ … You gonna picket? You’re not gonna offer her police protection? But the FOI [Fruit of Islam] will,” Farrakhan said during a speech on Saviour’s Day this weekend.

The line received thunderous applause and a standing ovation.

Farrakhan’s comments come after police officers in Tampa and Miami said they would boycott Beyoncé’s tour stops. However, the Tampa Police Department has since said that “dozens” of officers have volunteered to work security for the singer’s concerts.

Though the opportunity to work at the concerts is a chance for law enforcement officers to make a little extra money, many felt Beyoncé’s “Formation” music video was offensive to what they do for a living.

Farrakhan also mocked former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who said Beyoncé was using the Super Bowl platform to “attack people who put their lives at risk to save us.”

Last summer, the Fruit of Islam protected rappers Jay Electronica and Jay Z during their performances at the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival, according to Complex.
