Actress Sophia Bush Wants to ‘Move on’ From Abortion to Topics That ‘Actually Matter’

Abortion is just getting in the way of discussing the real issues in the United States, according to actress Sophia Bush.

During an interview last week on HuffPost Live, NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” star was asked by host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani, “What are the biggest issues in the United States that you think need to be worked on?”

Bush made it clear that abortion isn’t on her list. In fact, she says the current divisive discourse on the issue “frightens” her.

“I really do feel like I’m seeing a major regression in our politics and in the way that we protect our citizens in this country,” Bush said.

The actress believes politicians are using abortion to distract women from issues that “actually matter.”

“I feel like if they [politicians] can keep us talking about, you know, a woman’s place, a woman’s reproductive rights and all of these things that are ‘hot-button’ issues because they make people emotional — they can actually just, you know, defer us,” Bush said, “and then we’re not having the conversations we need to have about what our policy looks like, about what our financial situation looks like, about our education system, about our health care, about all of these things that actually matter in this country.”

According to Bush, the abortion debate has been in the limelight for too long.

“They’re like, ‘Oh, if we can just make them scream on either side about abortion, they won’t talk about anything else,'” she told Modarressy-Tehrani. “And it’s like, how about we just move on and, and we get to, like, the issues that weren’t decided by the Supreme Court 40 years ago.”

Bush says the discussion about abortion “doesn’t need to be so divisive,” adding that she feels Americans are “being played to get everybody screaming about something over here so that we’re not paying attention to all the issues happening back here.”

In the past, Bush has said she is “not exactly a fan of abortion,” but supports women’s right to “make that choice.”
