30+ Dems Defect on Tax-Vote Maneuver Boehner Calls ‘Chicken Crap’

On Thursday, Democrats pulled a sly political maneuver meant to derail Republican efforts to extend all of the Bush-era tax cuts. The move drew the ire of Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner (R-OH), who called it “chicken crap,” and also angered over 30 House Democrats who defected and voted against the maneuver.
The move will only allow debate on extending tax cuts for those making less than $250,000 a year, effectively shutting down debate on the most controversial part of the cuts: extending them for high-end earners — a group Republicans contend contains droves of small business owners.
Yesterday, Democrats scheduled a vote on the tax cuts for Thursday but only for those under the $250,000 mark. The move today now ensures that lawmakers will only be allowed to debate and vote on extending cuts below that threshold.
Shortly after the move was announced, Boehner expressed his extreme displeasure, accusing Democrats of playing “political games” and calling it “chicken crap”:
“Voting for this rule is, in effect, a vote to raise taxes and destroy jobs, and yet another sign that Washington Democrats just don’t get it,” Boehner spokesman Micheal Steel wrote in an e-mail to reporters.
Apparently Boehner and Steel aren’t the only ones who think so. A total of 33 Democrats broke rank to vote against the tactic. According to The Hill, the list of defectors contains mostly “centrist Blue Dog Democrats, many of whom were defeated on Election Day”:
Rep. John Adler (N.J.)
Rep. Jason Altmire (Pa.)
Rep. Brian Baird (Wash.)
Rep. Melissa Bean (Ill.)
Rep. Marion Berry (Ark.)
Rep. Dan Boren (Okla.)
Rep. Allen Boyd (Fla.)
Rep. Bobby Bright (Ala.)
Rep. Ben Chandler (Ky.)
Rep. Gerry Connolly (Va.)
Rep. Jim Cooper (Tenn.)
Rep. Jim Costa (Calif.)
Rep. Jerry Costello (Ill.)
Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper (Pa.)
Rep. Artur Davis (Ala.)
Rep. Brad Ellsworth (Ind.)
Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (S.D.)
Rep. Jim Himes (Conn.)
Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (Ariz.)
Rep. Dan Lipinski (Ill.)
Rep. Jim Marshall (Ga.)
Rep. Jim Matheson (Utah)
Rep. Mike McIntyre (N.C.)
Rep. Walt Minnick (Idaho)
Rep. Harry Mitchell (Ariz.)
Rep. Jim Moran (Va.)
Rep. Tom Perriello (Va.)
Rep. Gary Peters (Mich.)
Rep. Collin Peterson (Minn.)
Rep. Earl Pomeroy (N.D.)
Rep. Mike Ross (Ark.)
Rep. Heath Shuler (N.C.)
Rep. Zack Space (Ohio)
Despite the tactic, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) vowed that any bill that did not extend tax cuts to all would be dead on arrival in the Senate.
“Forty-two Republican senators, which is all of us, and an indeterminate number, significant number of Democrats, don’t think we ought to raise taxes on anybody,” McConnell said Wednesday night. “So regardless of what the majority forces House Republicans to do, it’s not going to go anywhere. We’re going to extend the current tax rates, we’re not going to raise taxes on anybody. The only thing we’re discussing right now is how long that extension will be.”

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 3:00pmThe tax rates need to be made permanent and not just extended. Businesses need to know the rates in the future so that they can reasonably plan. A 2 year extension is not going to be the jobs producer that making the rates permanent would bring and that’s what is important.

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 6:16pmAgreed. Permenant cuts would be the ideal situation. If not permenant than the longer they are locked in the more stability they give to business. Two years isnt exactly ideal but considering no U.S. business knows what thier tax rates will be in less than 30days, I welcome the stability that a 2 year assurance gives us.

I signed up to the Huffington Post just to read their comments section and could not believe all the vitriol spewed against the GOP and anyone who disagrees with their point of view, even if it is a plea to open their minds to a possible alternative solution to a problem. It’s their way or the highway. Granted, there is a lot of vitriol spewed on this forum as well; but for some reason, I can understand why the comments are made on the Blaze. We are all so angry, frustrated and disillusioned that expressing our anger helps relieve the tension. There seems to be a difference in the content or reason for the remarks here on the Blaze as opposed to the comments made at Huff Post. I’m trying very hard to approach each issue with an open mind, to weigh the arguments of both sides, then make a decision. My approach begins with no more talent or knowledge than common sense and fair play. I’m baffled by the attitudes of most of the folks at Huff Post. Are they all so close-minded they cannot even consider the arguments of the other side?

Like you, I did the same thing. I also arrived at the same conclusion. The so-called “open mined” liberal-progressives are some of the most closed-minded people I ever met. They want their cake and eat it too. It baffles the mind. They think that sending a convicted killer to the electric chair is unacceptable, and in the same breath they defend the abortion of a defenseless fetus under the premise of “choice”. They want jobs and great pay to be magically created by penalizing motivated, hard-working risk takers and entrepreneurs through high taxation because the aforementioned became “rich” through their efforts and self-motivation….and then bitch because the regulatory red-tape forces the business to move overseas in order to maintain open doors. They‘re the type that urinates on your leg and then try’s to convince you that it’s raining. They perpetually paint themselves into a fiscal corner and then cry for a bailout when the SHTF.
These people are mentally inferior and by arguing with them they succeed in bringing us down to their level and then they beat us with experience.
Progressives and liberals are like electricity….they always take the path of least resistance. This makes them susceptible to being short-circuited.
The day will come soon enough.

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 2:51pmAnother thing. It is not a tax cut! The government sets the rate at which it takes our money. This is a debate over the rate at which the government can take our money (regardless of income). In the governments wisdom, they impose a graduated tax rate in name of equality.
I would label a tax cut as money that the government has taken. Then through fiscal responsibility, decided that they took to much of my money and returned it. I do not mean a tax refund. That is simply correcting my error in exemption choices and letting the government hold my money interest free. A true tax cut means I get my money back over and above my mistake. The returned money is due to government efficiency (yea and hell will freeze over first or pigs will fly).

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 7:02pmThe income tax rate under Reagan for top earners was 50%. Now it’s about 35%. So I guess that makes Reagan a socialist, based on the ill-informed opinions I’m reading here.
An for those of you who think that if you give the wealthiest in the country more money, they’ll start hiring people – that is nonsense. People are laid off when there no demand for the product they make or the service they provide. That is the situation today – lack of demand because so many of us (not me by the way) or unemployed or underemployed. And nobody, for example, is going to hire a factory worker when there is no demand for the product the company makes, no matter how rich the company owner is. Why would he or she? When people like you and me have money, and start buying more, then people get hired, not before.
I love the posts here. A bill is proposed to extend the Bush era tax cuts (which were limited to 10 years because it was obvious how much those tax cuts would run up the debt) for 98% of Americans. And everybody is against that, despite the fact that corporate profits last quarter were the highest in history. Pathetic.
