350 Pound Olympic Weightlifter Holley Mangold Gets Makeover Pre 2012 London Olympics

Olympic darling Holley Mangold can lift between 300 and 500 pounds above her shoulders, according to the New York Times, but considers plucking her eyebrows “awful.”

The New York Times explains:

When you’re a big, strong girl — a really big, strong girl — it’s easier to pull the table to your chair than to scoot your chair toward the table. Doorknobs need to be tightened, or you might pull them off. Holley Mangold, 22 and a superheavyweight Olympic weight lifter, is 5-foot-8 and weighs 350 pounds. When she squats, which she can do with 525 pounds on her shoulders, she looks almost wholly like an egg. “I get a lot of Creepy McCreepersons interested in me because I’m so big it’s not normal, it’s like a fetish,” she [said] one day in the gym. “And I don’t like to sit outside. Not because I don’t like to be outside, but usually there are plastic chairs. Once you break a couple plastic chairs, you’re afraid of them all.”

“What do you think of my makeup, good or whorish?” Mangold asked [her friend, lifting partner, and agent Drew Dillon] one late afternoon this spring when they met at the Y to lift. Mangold was trying to perfect what she called her “professional makeup look” in advance of London. Dillon shrugged…

Now, the sister of the New York Jets’ Nick Mangold is getting professional assistance to prepare for the upcoming Olympic games in London.

“I feel like women weightlifters try to be too feminine just to show that they’re still feminine,” Mangold cautioned. “I don’t do that. I try to have a nice balance.”

She added: “I don’t want to be small,” she said. “That would be awful. Nobody remembers the skinny girl’s name.”

The athlete seemed pleased with the results in the subsequent photo shoot.

“They look really beautiful…they’re coming out really nice,” the photographer said of the photos.

Jokingly shaking her head, Mangold said: “Well, that’s [because] I’m in the picture.”

But in the end, her mind is still on the competition.

“I think what I’m looking forward to the most is having the opportunity to represent my country.  It’s the ultimate test of what you can do.  I’m just really excited to go out there with the red, white, and blue and represent my country the best way I know how.”

      Seriously, you‘re encouraging a 350 lb woman that she doesn’t have a weight problem? This story really touched a nerve with a lot of the female blaze readers because they are obviously self-conscious about their own weight. 350 lbs isn’t healthy…and she’s 22 years old….Don’t expect her to live a long and fulfilling life.

      @ARMYWIFE, I’m in great shape because I free climb 3-5 days/week and hike. I want to continue to perform better and climb continually harder routes so that’s why I train. Yes, I come off as a jerk about this story because I have a problem with morbidly obese people. To me, they are just as irresponsible as a heroin addict. The problem is our society has become so politically correct because people take no responsibility for their actions anymore. From my perspective, it’s morally wrong to delude and encourage a morbidly obese person to continue their lifestyle.

      I‘m pretty sure it’s not morbid obesity if you’re able to lift 500lbs OVER YOUR HEAD.
      She may not look like your dream girl but have no doubt, she could snap you like a twig and likely has more muscle than you have total bodyweight… unless YOU’RE morbidly obese.

      She didn’t put on the weight in hopes of winning Olympic Gold – she was always overweight, she was a lineman on her high school football team, and after high school she took up competitive weight lifting.

      I saw a report on HBO’s Real Sports about her and she seemed to have her head screwed-on right, she was healthy, and has a more active lifestyle than almost anyone I know outside of professional athletes.

    The “bulk” of these comments are the worst piggery I have encountered in a long time. Here is a beautiful woman (look at her face you fat heads). So, how do you think she spends her days…eating bonbons or working out more than most of you will do in a lifetime? It would never occur to you bigots that she might have been born with the genetics for her build…in other words she might be doing quite well in being the person God made her to be.       Fat is not genetics. Fat is a choice, except for the very rare people with a true problem with hypothyroidism (what they used to call a glandular thing, back in the ol’ times).

      I put in copious amounts of work in a gym, fwiw.

      If she has a hypothyroidism problem, then I agree with you. Otherwise, not so much.

      Wow! Really? This can’t be the generation I grew up in. This 22 year old woman would most likely shame all you “bullies” in the weight room AND with her list of small accomplishments like, I don’t know, maybe being in the Olympics 4 years ahead of schedule. It does make me wonder what superior physiques the negative posters have and how much time they dedicate to become regarded as one of the best in the U.S. at any one thing. Also I wonder if they would have the same attitude speaking with her brother, Nick Mangold who is 6’4”, weighs in at 307lbs and had a salary of over $2.2 million playing in the NFL. I bet the Mangold parents are wondering why their kids can’t be as successful as you negative posters.

      There is nothing attractive about loads of fat. The fat does not contribute to muscularity or skeletal strength. Even the “Russian Weight Lifters” who were barrel chested, were still solid as a rock.

      I respect what this woman is accomplishing on the weight lifting. But let’s not sugar coat this. There are women in far better, less fat shape, that will eventually clean her clock. And rightly so.

      Gee, ghost, I don’t know how old you are, but you must not have been around in the ‘70’s when Soviet Super-heavyweight Vasily Alekseyev was posting all kinds of records. Go here

      @cadisasterrelief…She is FAT. Not muscular. The fat she has had on her body for many years has added to her strength because she has yo carry that lard a@@ around all day. Take it from a former 400 pounder myself. You can lose weight. lots of it, like I did. You also can lift heavy weights and be good at it, like I did…I am almost 60 and in grerat shape…I guarantee i would kick your a@@ in the gym as I spend almost every day there….and you will not be a big a@@ fat slob while beinmg a gym rat unless you eat like a PIG.

      At 22…yep, she’s a pig, like it or not. Oink Oink. No discipline at all…

      I never questioned your physical capabilities, but there wasn’t much reason to flaunt it. You suggested all weight-lifters are fat, this is not simply not true. Olympic Weightlifting is grouped into weight classes just like wrestling. Are you going to watch the heavy-weights wrestle and say all wrestlers are fat? Or are you going to use your brain and remember that there are feather-weights as well?

      I’m not the one parading a makeover around. Because I comment on her makeover status doesn‘t mean I don’t support her or not want her to succeed in the Olympics. I just don‘t think there’s enough make-up in the world that would make a 350lb weightlifter attractive to me. She‘s probably a dynamite person and someone I’d like and respect but it wouldn’t matter to me as far as looks go. And that‘s what makeover’s are about; looks.

      You hit the nail on the head. If this were about her weightlifting only, I’d be with those booing the “downgraders”. She’s trying to make fat appear beautiful with a makeover. Well, it’s not. Except to those who find everything beautiful in order to “avoid hurting feelings”. I respect her accomplishments, except at makeover time, in which case if she wanted to look like a beautiful lady, she’d have chosen a different path. You cannot have it all, no matter who you are. Choose your path, and stick with it. With every rose there are bound to be thorns. Accept it.
