39 Dems Break Rank in Adjournment Vote, Pelosi Casts Tiebreaker

In an almost-surprising turn of events, House Democrats on Wednesday barely won a 210-209 vote to adjourn the House without extending the Bush tax cuts. 39 Democrats broke rank and voted against adjournment, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had to cast the tiebreaking vote.

In a rousing speech on the House floor before the vote, Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) called on his colleagues to stay in session long enough to vote on tax cuts: “Vote no on this adjournment resolution. Give Congress a chance to vote on extending tax rates.” After the vote was finalized, he accused those voting for adjournment of “putting their election above the needs of your constituents.”

Ironically, Democrats voting not to adjourn might have made that decision based on politics, too.

“Virtually every politically vulnerable Democrat, ranging from Bobby Bright of Alabama to Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota to Frank Kratovil of Maryland, voted against adjourning the House,” Politico reports, “believing they should stick around to extend the tax cuts.”

Many Democrats have been breaking with their party’s agenda as Americans increasingly grow disgruntled with the party’s track record in Congress. Breaking rank, then, may be a last-ditch effort to show that the candidates are more loyal to their constituencies than their party.

The vote to adjourn does not mean an immediate departure for the Representatives. As The Hill reports, the House still has to vote on several issues, including a measure to keep the federal government operating through Dec. 3, before it adjourns.

The Hill also released a list of all the Democrats who voted against adjournment:

Rep. John Adler (N.J.)

Rep. Jason Altmire (Pa.)

Rep. Michael Arcuri (N.Y.)

Rep. Melissa Bean (Ill.)

Rep. Tim Bishop (N.Y.)

Rep. Bobby Bright (Ala.)

And one more thing on this issue of going home without the vote on extending the tax breaks! Those Dems who wanted the vote to occur were obviously trying to save their own hides by voting to extend. The others who sided with Madame Speaker plan to vote “no” and figured such a vote would kill any chance they might have for re-election. Of course they want to wait……..nothing quite like a self serving politician.

Nancy and Company have given the American People one last slap in the face with this vote to adjourn without having voted on taxes. The embarrassment Ms. P. would have suffered had the vote taken place was more than she could handle. Worry not, Nancy P., soon you won’t have to worry about it ever again!

It is fake for dems to condend that 1 short of their vote made a difference. What is going on here, is what goes on in votes that the American people are for and the ruling class is against. They know it will fail and they give cover to those who are in trouble. It is like the “blue dog” dems momentarily yammering that they would not vote for a bill that had tax payer funded abortions when they never intended to vote against it in the stimulus bill and just disguised the wording. It is dishonest. The non-victory is not that some dems, yet one short..voted with repubs, ..it is that they ran the numbers and gave fake cover to some..knowing the outcome. It is dishonest at its core. It is pandering and lying…They tanked it within the margin of intended failure. That is the strategy.

I am calling BS. All a big show. Did you Dems forget that your entire voting record can be looked up by any voter? If you wanted to make a statement to the American people about giving two shakes, you wouldn’t have blindly followed your leaders for the last four years. Time to pay the piper, and the cost is a tad bit higher than one vote on one bill.

Uh, not to argue here, but I actually take minutes for municipal meetings. It would have taken an incredible amount of coordination to get that even of a split on a vote. Plus, with over 400 people voting, it takes time to tally, even if you do it electronically. Regardless of people’s motives for voting the way that they did, Pelosi was the tie breaker and she’s going to have to live with that. The fact that it was evenly split tells me that the extended tax breaks were important items.

Yeah, we lost them, but those Dems didn’t have to cross the aisle either. When it’s a clear majority one way or the other, a politician can vote his/her conscience, knowing that it won’t change the final decision. But when votes are that tight, aisle crossers pay a price. I’m not saying these aisle crossers are angels of light and mercy all of a sudden, but they made a really clear statement. Now, it’s time for us to make a really clear statement.

Hopefully, people will not be basing their votes on the result of one vote, but on how the candidates served or did not serve their constituants. 34 more shopping days til Election!

@CLIPPER I gave them commendation only because breaking ranks was the right thing to do. They may have done it to save their own hides in November, but I think the people who voted not to vote on extending the cuts essentially voted for an economic depression. It may not happen, but certainly, introducing additional uncertainty into an already unstable economy, certainly increases the risk of economic disaster.

The Democrat leadership is hoping they will hold control of the House of Representatives after the election. Then, with their power intact, they will raise taxes on the over $200,000 group.

If the Democrats lose control of the House, they will embark on a slimey attempt to compromise some Republicans into treating the over $200,000 group differently than all others.

These dems that voted against adjournment need to be scrutinized as to why they voted against the democratic party. It’s a little funny they had just enough votes to adjourn. I would like to review the vote video to see how many voted after they had enough for adjournment. This feels dirty.

I’m sure that everyone of these guys will exclaim “See i wanted to vote” when the rage hit the streets and the polling booths. The lame duck session is going to be a nightmare but the new congress in January is going to have to spend a month on repeal votes and then another month to shut down the currupted departments of gov’t expecially with having to overide the veto-ocracy that will develope at the white house. Which i am certain will happen. God help us! Please pray for them, that they will not abuse their powers in an effort of retribution.
