4 Arrested After Setting American Flags on Fire at Occupy Charlotte Camp

Four men were arrested early Friday after setting two American flags on fire just feet from the Occupy Charlotte encampment in North Carolina.

Burning the flag isn’t illegal, but the four were charged with careless use of a fire, a misdemeanor, McClatchy Newspapers reported. Police said they were charged because they didn’t use a fire pit.

Local police initially said they weren’t sure whether the four were affiliated with the Occupy Charlotte movement, but several people at the site said at least two were Occupy Charlotte protesters and that one was the group’s spokesman.

Local CBS affiliate WBTV-TV said two American flags were burned, though initial reports said it had just been one.

According to the station, officers said they noticed something being lit on fire directly in front of the camp, located on the lawn area of City Hall. Police surrounded the area and detained the men while firefighters knocked out the blaze. The fire caused about $30 worth of damage to landscaping at the site.

It wasn’t until after the flames were out that officials realized flags had been burned, WBTV reported.

Police said the men claimed they were burning the flag in protest. According to WBTV, the men complained loudly while being arrested and called the officers names.

Occupy Charlotte released a statement to local NBC affiliate WCNC-TV saying the flag burning does not reflect the people or message of the group.

I’ve always known the Democrat party was a conglomerate mass of disgusting, anti-American, filth-riden reprobates but I never thought they would actually come out of their closets with such fervor. And to put icing on the cake, the morons in the Whitehouse and all the way down to the DNC actually believe this is helping their cause.

    The louder you Democrat pinheads get, the greater you expand & solidify, “We the Peoples”, resolve to flush you down the toilet in the 2012 elections.
    In 2010 we pushed down on the toilet handle.

    I dont know about any of the rest of you, but when someone burns our flag on our soil, it makes my blood boil. These punks need a good lesson in respect. About 10 minutes out behind the woodshed would be a good start. I thought it was against the law to desecrate our flag. How much more of this kind of crap are we going to take? When are we going to take our country back? There are 2 ways we can do it. One way is through elections and then there is the other way,the hard way, by force. Seems like the election thing is not working with all the fraud surrounding elections ie. ( multiple votes by one person, illegals voting and dead people voting). I am thinking is about time for that other way, the hard way.

      Dale, as someone who has gone to a war zone to protect this nation, I have to tell you that some idiot burning a flag is the least of my worries. In fact, I happen to believe that burning your own property is both legal insomuch as it would be a violation of your right to free speech and your right to property to make it illegal. If you read the story, you’ll notice that they were not charged with vandalism or burning a flag, but for endangering the property of others with an uncontained fire. They won‘t and shouldn’t be charged with arson as it was not their intent to burn down anyone’s property so far as I can tell. They will and should only receive a slap on the wrist fine at worst for this.

      I wish they would love to see them burn one in the middle of my old home: Ft. Bragg, NC. Then they could explain it to the 82nd Airborne Division, Special Forces & Delta Force. I think it would be quite educational for the young folks. Do it on one of the many fields named in memory of a CMH recipient.

      I remember reading years ago, overseas there was a protest where they started burning American flags, one of the idiots lit a flag on fire, a polyester flag, raised it over his head, and was coated in burning, melting plastic. I think they have learned and will only burn cloth flags.

      It is true that they are entitled to burn whatever these people so desire to burn. They have that right of course.

      My only point is in response to this quote:

      I personally think this is exactly what this movement is all about. It does reflect on this movement and the people that are involved. They are free to do what it is that they so desire to do but it is what they are about and what they think of this country.

      For Occupy Charlotte to deny this is ridiculous in that it is what they are about. That is all I can say about that. It is them and their purpose whether they have a right or not to burn a flag. That is secondary to what this movement stands for.

      These people have no direction on what they are attempting to accompolish. All they know is to recite from a scripted piece of paper and echo it from the rest of the group. When they have a coherent message or thought then I would like to hear about it.

    As you might know – I HATE THIS kind of thing. But I believe it falls under Freedom of Speech. I don’t think they really understand what they are doing. I think they only do it because they know how much it bothers so many of us. Maybe it would be better if we didn’t give them the reaction they are hoping for………. Or I could catch them doing it, react & plead insanity. (Or sanity as the case may be.)

A group of Muslim college students in mast tried that here… well were they taught that they weren’t on CNN real quick. officers gathered them up as soon as they could make it through the following may-ham, locked em up for their own protection, they were Immediately expelled from college and found themselves on fast track out of here pretty rapidly… bunch of the boys from the base and locals see things a bit different than some do…

      Actually there was a youtube video showing a woman reading from the koran and had each passage bookmarked with bacon strips.

      As she read a page she tore it out and burned it. It was rather comical to me. She gave her name and address out as well in the event any muslims felt offended. Not sure it was her real name and address but she still had guts to bookmark the koran with bacon strips and tear out each page and then burn it.

      I’m with you 82. I really don’t understand these kind of things. I mean, you probably hate some people in your country, an specific law or a government, but why these guys hate their country as whole?….I wouldn’t be able to burn the flag of my country..ever. This is just insane. I love my country and its flag, although I don’t like many things, some laws, some people and some governments…..

      It isn’t illegal. However, the flag should be held in sacred esteem. But if a person isn’t taught to regard the flag that way, he/she won’t. It’s a heart issue. It could be made an illegal behavior, but you can’t legislate an attitude. That’s a heart issue. My heart is filled with gratitude to all vets. God bless you all.

      As someone who has served this nation and taken an oath to defend not our flag, but our Constitution and the principles it stands for, I’d like to tell you that you are 100% wrong. Burning a flag that YOU OWN is not and should never be illegal. If that flag is the property of someone else, then you are a thief and should be treated as such. But, to make burning a flag that you own illegal is to do away with freedom of speech and property rights in America.

      Furthermore, the pledge of allegiance was invented by a marxist to indoctrinate the American youth. No man should render obedience to a FLAG! It is nothing more than a symbol. No man is even made to render obedience to another man, let alone a piece of cloth. Men who serve take an oath to uphold an ideal and a set of principles that they can all agree to. Unfortunately, the military does not put the Constitution so high on their priorities and they do not ensure that our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines read it before they sign that enlistment contract or receive their commission. This should be priority number one for our military.

I understand that seeing someone burning the American flag can be offensive to some people, but under the First Amendment right to free speech, the Occupy protesters have the right to do that. I do agree with the police officers that the protesters are guilty of unintentionally starting an uncontrollable fire and find their arrests justifiable. However, I do believe that they should only receive a light penalty, as they were only charged with a misdemeanor.

      Before Progressive Liberal Democrats twisted the definition of “freedom of speech” into “freedom of expression”, burning the flag was illegal and you could be jailed for doing so. Perhaps all you uninformed youth forgot this little tidbit change to the Constitution because you were not alive before the change.

      Pledging allegiance to the flag means you will defend the United States and the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. If you burn the flag you now just became a domestic enemy.

      If you cannot pledge allegiance that means you will not defend America from all enemies foreign and domestic. That makes you a TRAITOR. You might not like this definition, but it is my definition of you. This by no means you agree with everything the US does and you can protest that disagreement and make your disagreement known; that I will defend. But the moment you set fire to the flag, you lose all support from me.

      You know that it is unfortunate that so many have died to preserve our flag and that fact is so disrepected by the young people in our country.

      Probably many of their parents, grandparent and great grandparents died in wars supporting our country represented by the flag. They disrespect the slain and fallen heroes of our country when they do this.

      I expect our enemies to burn our flag, but we as Americans need to stand together in support of our flag. It is our common banner. Yes they have the right to burn it but they insult every living and evry dead service member and untold numbers of the American public. I don’t think that is the way to sway public opinion to support their cause. To bad Tiger Woods can’t come out and say that from the oval office.

      That is why every chance you get-you take your kids and/or grandkids to local parades/ re-enactments/airshows/ etc. After all {gasp} gee, those kids who actually attend parades grow up to VOTE??! The thought of burning book, much less than our Flag-our National Symbol, fought over and bled over -I cringe. But, let them burn ‘er. IN THE MEAN TIME SHOW EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING IN THE MIDDLE EAST REGARDING WOMEN AND THOSE WHO DO NOT SUPPORT SHARIA LAW….just throw in a few news tidbits every now and then.

I’ve got September 11th marked as a National Day of Rememberance. Heck, Pearl Harbor IS remembered in my work section, cuz I keep on it. In November I have the days marked off to how soon you can vote?! Yes, I am that weird co-worker who bleeds red white ‘n blue. That all said-let them burn the Flag. Burn baby burn…I will be there to collect the ashes and give them to my local Veteran’s group for PROPER disposal.

      Personally, i think it should be a crime, but i think it falls under the free speech amendment. Isn’t it ironic how these people who claim to hate our constitution so much, hide behind it and use it to their advantage when they do these hideous things?

      The funny thing is I have never seen anyone who is protesting against the govt, on the conservative side, burn our flag. Always the radicals on the left. I do notice that they don’t usually burn the Polyester flags anymore, it tends to goop and stick as it burns, kind of like napalm.
