4 Big Stories About Apple Computer in One Day

  • Story #1 – Steve Jobs returns from Medical Leave next Monday – it may be just for the day, but the Apple CEO is going to deliver the keynote address at Apple’s Developer Conference.
  • Story #2 – Apple has a new operating system called Lion to be introduced by Jobs.
  • Story #3 – iCloud will also debut on Monday, but little is known about this new service.
  • Story #4 – The Apple Store on 5th Avenue may be the “most-photographed” landmark in New York City

As reported on TheBlaze in early March, Steve Jobs returned from medical leave to announce the release of the iPad2. Since that day, we haven’t seen much of the ailing Apple CEO. But then, yesterday morning brought the news about Steve Jobs. The following was  released from Apple’s corporate press department:

CUPERTINO, California—May 31, 2011—Apple® CEO Steve Jobs and a team of Apple executives will kick off the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) with a keynote address on Monday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. At the keynote, Apple will unveil its next generation software – Lion, the eighth major release of Mac OS® X; iOS 5, the next version of Apple’s advanced mobile operating system which powers the iPad®, iPhone® and iPod touch®; and iCloud®, Apple’s upcoming cloud services offering.

Word of Steve Jobs giving the keynote speech is also credited with a spike in Apple’s stock on Tuesday. Shares of the computer/entertainment company jumped more than 3% and closed over $347.00.

ZDnet.com also wondered what other news might be released at the big event on Monday:

Apple did not confirm, however, whether or not we’ll be seeing a new iPhone model unveiled at the event. That will likely not happen until at least this fall when Apple typically unveils new iPods in time for the back-to-school season.

And then there is the growing celebrity status of the flagship Apple Store on 5th Avenue:

Tech News Daily calls the large glass cube “NYC’s most-photographed attraction:”

Researcher Eric Fischer mapped and analyzed millions of photos on flicker that were taken throughout the city and looked at their geo-tagged information — such as time and date they were shot –to determine patterns of interest.

Although the sleek glass exterior of the Fifth Avenue Apple store gets the most pictures, Rockefeller Center (no. 2), Columbus Circle (no. 3) and Times Square (no. 4) were also on the list.

Fischer also looked at popular Apple stores in various other cities, such as Chicago, but the retailer didn’t rank as high up on the photo attraction list as its New York flagship location.

You can see why people might be enticed to shoot a few photos of this interesting building:

The picture doesn’t do the building justice. The architecture is breathtaking. If you look closely at the picture, the building sits on a platform of stone or concrete that surrounds it, you can see the two steps all around it. The store is not at the street level. You have to go down either stairs or an elevator (I forget). Also, I have never seen so many people in a store all at one time. It was amazing. I loved it.

Brilliant marketing technique using the jedi mind trick on so many at one time. Oh this product is so far superior to everything else its worth three times the price. So, were going to have to charge you more for a smaller selection of software. And did I mention security is not a problem with our proprietary equipment. Nice stuff, very generous corporation, wont afford it. Sorry if i hurt your geekey little feelings but you need to understand basic economics and common sense.

So, is Apple going to support Flash now? Join the rest of the computing world, maybe?

I’ve been in the computer business since waaay before the Mac or the PC. I’ve only come into contact with a handful of Apple products over those years, and frankly they were all pretty useless. Interesting to look at but not terribly useful in a business sense. I work for the largest computer company on the planet, around here there’s a sea of Windows machines and our server products support multiple operating systems, but no Macs. No Macs in the house and no support for Mac OS.

Apple is a niche player and will remain so as long as Jobs is at the helm.

I’m rather partial to Pardus Linux here. I find it to be rather well polished and the most “noob friendly” of all the distros I’ve tried so far. Now, consider that building your own PC can be much cheaper and often of better quality than buying a brand name computer, then factor in the cost of the FREE Operating System equals a win-win situation in my opinion.:p

Job is now and always has been a marketing guy. He forges relationships and create monopolies and makes a lot of money doing it.

The actual hardware they make is nothing special. And yes, I own a lot of macs.. they all run Windows.
Loved those cheap-ass white keyboards. I have a ton of them sitting on the shelf because they failed within the first few months of using them.
I have a few of their 4000 dollar computers.. each of which has numerous parts that were so cheap they failed. Simple things like the audio connectors are pure crap.

They are not so good at backwards compatibility either. That’s because they know they can make what they need from the sheep that line up to buy the latest and greatest trinket from their suicidal Chinese partners. Yet I can still install Windows on some pretty old PCs. And it will work.

Jobs and Apple did themselves a service by becoming the ‘liberal’s computer’. I recall their “1984” ad from the 80′s. They have become exactly what they were preaching against when they were small and hungry. If I have to buy some thing from them I can’t help feeling like a sucker.

Jobs is an idiot that have made a lot of money off other idiots. Apple is a software company, and if Jobs had ever figured that our, Microsoft wouldn’t exist today. People buy apple stuff because it has slick polished software that mostly works. If Jobs would sell stand alone copies of osx/iphone ios that would run on any pc, any smartphone, mp3 player, tv, dvd player, they would take over the software world, but they want, they want to pretend they make hardware. They remind me of TiVo, they took the idea of a DVR that had been around for decades, but couldn’t be mass marketed because of the cost of the hardware, got the first affordable one to market with a great software front end. Rather than license their front end to direct/dish/time warner/comcast for a reasonable rate of say $10 per set top box, they wanted $5 a month per set top box, they withered even though their name lives on, they are 1000th the size they could have been, same with apple, they have 1/10 the market/profits they could have if they would just admit they are a software company and sell their software.

Now that Apple has made the move to the x86 platform, “Mac” is just a hardware locked OS now. or rather an operating system with very limited device support, unlike windows and the thousands of Linux distributions that support 10,000′s of hardware components Mac only supports apple branded/approved hardware which is why their hardware is soo expensive, they have a monopoly….

Personally I HATE vendor lockins and refuse to do business with companies that promote vendor lockin.

People have been saying that for years… for the entire 20+ years we’ve been Mac users. Hackers and coders are already trying. Have been for a long time. They have occasional small “successes”. Apple does a good job staying on top of it and putting out security updates.

They are machines we take online. That means they can be susceptible. Still, Apple’s “market share” of these types of problems is pretty miniscule.

**And for you Apple users, a security update was released yesterday to address, I hear, a malware issue, so it’s time to run Software Update. =)

Apple is just a perfect example of your ‘American Dream’ which is if you have money rules dont apply, correct? I dont understand Americans….If Americans love something, in this case Apple, they are ok with slave labor, but if its something like illegal mexican immigrants taking jobs (which they dont take American jobs, they just do the jobs Americans are either too lazy to do or feel they are above.) then its an issue. I’m with you, Oh, God! I most vehemently disagree with his political thoughts and leanings but Steve Jobs is Apple and Apple makes a superior product, hands down. Years ago, when I bought my first Mac, I remember reading the installation instructions for a toddler reading game we had bought for our daughter, The Windblows instructions were 2 paragraphs long; the Mac instructions read, “Insert disc, click on the icon on your screen”. Seriously, people, life is complicated enough- why make it more so by using an inferior product? Mac OS systems do not crash, are impervious to viruses and remain the easiest to operate. And, let’s face it, Mac has the slickest product line, too. It’s simple: Mac innovates, everyone else tries to copy and keep up.

Don’t forget unparalleled innovation, superior design and craftsmanship, and unmatched versatility. Yeah, my mac can do anything your PC can do, better than your PC can do it, and then do things your PC can’t do. That’s right, I can run any windows program and use any windows device. I can do this with relative impunity from threats. Yes, we all know macs are theoretically vulnerable too and have been hacked in labs and competitions many times, but there is, at present, only one mac threat actually in the wild, vs about 80,000 for windows. I have no problem admitting that Apple is a luxury brand, no different than, say, Mercedes Benz. You pay more, but you get more. Is it worth the difference? Depends on what you’re after, I suppose. It’s worth it to me.

      @OH, GOD!

Like I said in a post below, anything after the Leopard MAC was based on the x86 platform, so everything else is just software, Infact in a pure hardware sense non-apple vendor locked PC hardware is FAR FAR more capable then apple PC hardware.

Further, all Adobe products work perfectly well on windows (thought I wish they would make them for Linux, Wine does not like CS5 at all) so 2D graphic design should be the same on either, just visual cues different but the underlying processing power has no difference on either platform

there are some 3D and Movie applications that still only work on OSX, but those are fewer and fewer with every year. What you say might have been true a few years ago, but that is no longer the case today. Plus the switch from 32bit to 64bit has exponentially helped with the processing of large graphic files.

      right on!

It has nothing to do with capability of the products or linux based would be the only operating systems. It has to do with marketing and familiarity then people tell themselves the marketing they bought into is true and they really are smart and the marketing confirms this over and over and they believe it. Would a terrorist believe he won’t get his 72 virgins? Would a mac fan-boy believe they are gullible to marketing? Mac is great a marketing/packaging anything else you want to tell your self just shows how gullible you are and little you understand about technology.
