Tragedy has struck Indiana for the fourth time this month. An Indiana sheriff says a 4-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head by an errant bullet while out fishing with his father.
Wells County Sheriff Monte Fisher told The Associated Press on Sunday that Jacob “Jake” Michuda was shot in the head late Friday night while he and his father were fishing from a pier at a pond outside Ossian.
Forty-six-year-old neighbor Bruce Pond is being held on a preliminary charge of reckless homicide and is due to appear in court Monday.
Family friend Trisha Ulmer tells The Journal Gazette of Fort Wayne the shooting was a “freak accident.”
Fisher tells the Bluffton News-Banner alcohol was involved and that Pond apparently shot at a light on the pier where the father and son were fishing.
The incident is the fourth fatal shooting of an Indiana child in less than a month. A 4-year-old Cedar Lake boy died Thursday after accidentally shooting himself, a 2-year-old Connersville boy died July 14 after accidentally being shot by his 5-year-old brother, and a 6-year-old Martinsville boy died June 30 after being shot by his 11-year-old brother.
According to the Goodwin Memorial Chapel website, Jacob would have turned 5 next month, on Aug. 24.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 7:55pmThose dang evil guns….‘we’ll get em yet” I’m sure the leftists reading this are saying. It’s the blame game, blame blame blame blame…It’s as if in a country with 400 million people accidents and odd incidents never occur. But it’s OK to arm MS13 with 10 million dollars worth of weapons and wait for the bodybags to pile up.
Could you imagine the worldwide uproar if the Bush administration did such a crazy thing? Headline after headline after protest after protest and effigies burning and it would be endless liberal calls for this head and that head but to them this is counts less on their radar screens than basically a suicide by a lifelong British smack junkie and 5 people listening to idiots voicemails who never changed their default passcodes.
It’s almost enough madness to make you quietly pray for a peaceful while sleeping death on some days until you gather yourself and say “these nuts aren’t shaking my tree bare”.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 7:55pmResponsible gun ownership is important. As a young person we were given gun safety classes in High school the boys and girls always brought guns to school on the back window of their pick up truck. The trucks were never locked, What is the difference between now and then? Stupidity and lack of respect has become the norm.

So many of today’s youth see TV and think because they see it, “hey, this is the way I’m expected to act”
Sorry about that folks, life is real, TV is educational and entertaining.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 9:29pm@Spirit of Truth:
It is not too many Guns. Because if you take the gun away from the Human and lay it on the ground it can not kill on its own, it is like a log or a stick unless the Human picks up the stick or the gun it has no way to move point or shoot.
But you need to blame the Human for drinking and trying to shoot a dangerous weapon, even though he believed that the pier was deserted his recklessness will live on for the rest of his life and the boys family that was killed by his actions.
Only God and his Spirit can heal these wounds and some day that will happen. I pray for all involved since this was a Stupid and Senseless way to end a life.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 6:25pmHow Horrible…..The dad had his child out fishing and enjoying their time together and some Drunk fool shoots a gun. I cannot even begin to imagine what this family is going thru. My prayers are with them in this time of need. What a horrible thing to happen.
It said 4 had been killed recently, I have my guns and believe in the 2nd amendment. But people who leave loaded guns where children or anyone for that matter can get their hands on them do not deserve the right to bear arms. They forfeited that right. The other children killed were killed while playing with loaded guns. OMG

Report Post »The stupid is one drunken Billy Bob gettin’ liquored up and playing with a deadly weapon. You’re an @$$ and deserve to do some time.
The shameless are the activists who will use this tragedy to generalize and assert ALL guns must go… as they know what’s best.
As long as man walks the earth, bad things will happen to good people. That’s not trite, it’s true. We know the source of the bad thing in this instance: Bruce Pond. Punish him, not the entire population.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 8:38pmYeah, besides as they say “guns don’t kill people, people kill people”. Drunken people with guns sure don’t help. We believe in our 2nd Ammendment rights, and we have loaded guns, but we didn’t when we had little ones around. All our kids and grandkids have had hunter safety, and have been taught since a young age that guns are NOT TOYS and should never be used as such. My 13 year old grandson got his limit in deer last year, but he hunted with an adult and was instructed all the way on how to handle his rifle, his bow and his muzzle loader. I too, feel terrible for this innocent child and I pray for his grief stricken family who will never get over this loss. I think how I would feel if it were one of mine. My son and grandson are always out fishing and even very careful people can get injured while hunting or shooting around water. One of my cousins was permanently blinded in one eye by a buckshot that richocheted off their pond when the boys were shooting at snakes in the pond. You can never be to careful.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 10:09amUnfortunately, it is not only the drunken billybobs. Our neighbor and his children shoot in their yard all the time (less than one acre of land). When I reminded him that on the other side of his shooting range about 60 feet away was a child’s play yard, I was the busybody neighbor. He claimed it was his yard and he could do what he wanted. Such a good Smithian neighbor.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 5:34pmLets hope that this time they lay the blame where it belongs. The neighbor was negligent and had no business handling a firearm or any other object that could hurt someone.
The gun, just like a car requires a responsible person to operate it; by itself, it does not kill anything.

As conservatives we often talk about responsibilities being packaged up with rights in a lot of other contexts. Can’t we do something to keep firearms out of the hands of the terminally stupid? Make sure Gomer knows how to unload a gun and check it’s clear before cleaning it? Because if we don’t start doing a little bit more in the way of self-governance, you know Nanny is going to come in and take >everything< away.

The only reason they will get their panties in a bunch here is because they think they can score political “points” in their effort to disarm everybody but themselves. They could care less about a 4 year old. After all, he would have grown up to be a drain on their system. /s>
