400 Rounds, 17 Grenades, & 30 Enemies: Soldier Single-Handedly Beats Back Taliban Barrage

It took him 400 rounds, 17 grenades, and a machine gun tripod used as a weapon, but one British Gurkha soldier single-handedly beat back an attack by 30 Taliban fighters in Afghanistan last summer. And now he‘s getting one of his military’s highest honors:

Sergeant Dipprasad Pun, a 31-year-old from Bima in western Nepa and part of the Gurkha regiment serving the British Military, is receiving the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross for bravery. It’s well deserved. According to his superiors, Pun’s fearsom fighting is responsible for saving the lives of at least three other soldiers.

Yesterday, he explained his unbelievable battle (via the London Telegraph). Not only is he brave, but he’s also ingenious. At one point during the fighting, after running out of bullets, he fought off an attacker using a pole from a machine gun tripod:

Sgt Pun told yesterday how he was on guard duty at the base near Rahim Kalay in Helmand Province on September 10 last year when he heard a digging sound in the darkness in front of him.

Grabbing two radios, a GPMP machine gun, his SA80 rifle, a grenade launcher and an arsenal of hand-held grenades he climbed onto the rooftop and opened fire.

With rocket propelled grenades and gun fire flying over his head from all directions he defended the position for more than 15 minutes, killing three Taliban and forcing the others to flee.

At one point the diminutive soldier turned around to see a “huge” Taliban fighter approaching him on the rooftop, a few feet away, having silently scaled the wall, and shot him.

While the mass of Taliban fired from an area of open ground, another crept into the compound and tried to climb the wall but he spotted him.

“I tried to fire my SA80 but it wouldn’t work,” he said.

“I don’t know if there was an obstruction or the magazine was finished.

“I threw my SA80 down and grabbed a sandbag but it wasn’t tied and all the sand dropped out.

“As I tried to jump into the sentry post I found a metal rod from the GPMG (machine gun) tripod and pulled it round and hit him.”

As he ran towards the Taliban fighter he gave a shout of “Marchu Talai” Nepalese for “I’m going to kill you.”

A brief history of the Gurkha regiment, known for its fierce fighters, can be seen here.

“The Brigade of Gurkhas is one of the most decorated British Army Regiments and 13 of its soldiers have been awarded the Victoria Cross,” the Telegraph says. “The Gurkha motto is ‘Better to die than be a coward.’”

Gurkha’s are certainly “rude dude’s” and are not to be messed with.

My Navy heart STILL belongs to our Seal Teams and it’s mostly unsung, but this man deserves the pedestal and honors none the less. God Bless them ALL!

In the early 1970s while watching a parade that included the Queens carriage a gentleman next to me asked if I knew why the Gurkhas soldiers were marching behind the Queens carriage. He said it was because the British had never defeated the Gurkhas.

I asked where the US Marines march because the British never defeated them either. The guy walked away.

Men I served with died that day. I was going to observe that it was unnecessary, as the Clinton Administration had emboldened the islamist radicals while simultaneously impeding our nation’s ability to combat them, but what would be the point. Go back to Michael Moore’s fantasy world. I have had more than enough of people who tell me they support those of us in the military, but that the war is evil and we are killing innocents. You can not have it both ways … no matter what your feel-good, can’t we all just get along therapist says.

Progressiveliberalmarine, thank you for your service. One of the greatest things about this nation is that we have the freedom to offend one another with what we want to say. I missed serving in Vietnam (thank God) because the draft was stopped as I was finishing high school. I always respected the soldiers, but never had any friends who came back from combat that were not changed people. Those that did not see combat were the same as when they left for the service.

Growing up in the political corruption of the Vietnam era, I would never trust the politicians enough to put my life into their hands. They tend to make selfish decisions with other people’s lives.

      This reply is to usnvet-66-70:
I served from 64-68, so we may have even served together and I must ask “how did we allow it to get this way’? When and how did we the people loose control of America and all it stands for. I’ve read many of the comments here and I must submit where I believe it started. In my lifetime I started the school day with a reading from the Bible, usually a Psalm or Proverb, nothing doctrinal. No one ever felt (left out). Then, one woman went to war with “we the people” and won. G_d was no longer allowed in school, He was discriminatory, He hurt people’s feelings. Back to the point, the reading was followed by the entire class rising to place hand over heart, and pledge allegiance to America. There was never any fooling around during either. An infraction would be met with quick and decisive orders to “GO TO THE OFFICE”. Now some principals had the option of applying the old tried and true, one to several swats to one’s backside, usually by an instrument meant, not to injure, but to get the attention of the child and make it clear that that behavior will not be tolerated. It worked pretty good, for a long time, until, G_d and anything He had to say about how we live our lives, and treat each other, wasn’t allowed to be discussed, or even insinuated. We wouldn’t want anyone to FEEL pressured into loving the greatest country mankind ever envisioned.
Again I ask, “what the hell is going on”?…

In fact, I have trained many Marines on the rifle range in all aspects of Marksmanship, so I have a direct effect on the troops heading over to fight. I didn’t ask to get put in a non-deployable unit. I would also like to know what about my views give the military a bad name, it’s a good things to have a wide spanning personal and political viewpoint available in the military, as long as it doesn’t affect your war fighting capabilities.

I’ve never heard of this regiment before but my hat is off to them and I salute them. If we just had more soldiers like them that were fully informed and hated communism we could change things pretty fast. God bless them and keep them safe.

My hats off to him. Those Ghurkas are no joke and he certainly brought credit to himself and his unit with his actions.

      I knew thi guy wasn’t a brit!!
A Brit soldier would probably run and go hide, so would a French.
Sadly we’re heading inthe same direction, on our way to becoming a feminized fi

Bravo! Wonder if “Show me the money, but don’t kill my citizens” Karzai will launch an investigation to see if any innocent civilians were killed.

      He’s a Gurkha?

Then its just another day at the office for the man.

You need to know who these people are.

True warriors shake in their boots at the mention of these men from a fighting culture.

Their history is deep and proud.

This is what we do, this is what we live for…. we are the warriors from the country called Nepal. This may be surprise for the people in United States knowing about one Nepalese fighting for his honor but we are doing this for generation. We “Better to die than be a coward.’” We are the country of warriors called Nepal.

Avenger – Wanted to know your service dates for Vietnam, if you were macv-sog – you may know a family member of mine. He led South Vietnamese Rangers as a macv advisor. Couple of tours later he was on Westmorland’s staff. Would love to know if you knew him!
