5 Months in Jail: American Man Sentenced for ‘Blaspheming’ Islam

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An Indonesian court has sentenced an American businessman to five months in jail for marching into a mosque during Islamic prayers and ripping cables from the loud speakers.
Gregory Lloyd Luke was found guilty of blasphemy.
Mohammad Bilal, an official at the Praya District Court on Lombok island, said the 64-year-old was given a relatively lenient sentence because he was apologetic and polite during the hearings.
Luke, himself a Muslim, has a lodge for tourists on Kuta beach.
He stormed into the nearby mosque during prayers on Aug. 26 and disabled the speakers, which he said were too noisy.
A mob attacked him and ransacked his house, causing an estimated $20,000 in damage.

Still, this case is a classic example of why religion should not be determining law. Common sense would have put that guy in jail for a misdemeanor. Religious bigotry caused far more damage in the reaction of his fellow Muslims. That being said: Death To Islam. And it’s creator Mohamed is rotting in hell. Sounds familiar, don’t it.

That’s just plain stupidity especially considering this guy was a Muslim as well. At the same time however, I doubt the mob members will be charged for the damage which they caused to this man’s house and property. Both parties were at fault here in different ways and could each have acted more intelligently and civily to the problems they experienced.

If he allowed himself to be put under sharia law, then they probably would call it that, but he would have faced charges either way. I’m not for sharia law, but this story has nothing to do with anything.

The Koran and hadiths were written about 150 years after Mohammed’s death. The subsequent Muslim authors made the Islamic texts “convenient” for them. It all makes too much sense.

Hey man I took a look at your artwork. You really need some practice bro, I’m not saying this to be mean, I’m saying this as a tattoo shop owner and a man with a graphic arts degree. If you’re interested in learning what you are doing, I’d start with an art class to give you the basics. But you need to start at square one honestly. Like, maybe, the color wheel. Your lines are shaky, your shading is almost non existent and poorly done, and your light values are waaaay off. Hint: If the light is coming from the right, how do you have it on the bottom, top, up, down, and in some cases sideways? If you enjoy it, by all means do it, but learn what your doing first and you get better. I see no improvement on anything you’ve done.
Think of it like my golf game, played 10-11 yrs high 80′s. Took lessons, had to relearn everything I thought i knew, 3 yrs later, mid to high 70′s

And if he were to ask for help do you really think he would go to a “tattooist” for advice, I doubt it, I am not usually so mean myself but this is just uncalled for!!!! I think he should be able to paint anyway he wants reguardless of shadowing, blending or mixing his colors, don’t we all say art is in the eye of the beholder? So you don’t like his art, look at it and move on.Even if you were a well known “art critic” I don’t think that is the way a professional would go about his critique!! So sorry if I have offended you but this was just mean and uncalled for. I am not a holocaust denier but I would like to be able to make up my own mind about everything. As far as the tattoo artist comment, (BTW you left out w/ a degree in graphic arts) when we draw anything, on imperfect surfaces that bend, stretch, etc we are not afforded luxeries like erasers, or even flat surfaces, It’s permanent the first time. Just wondering, if you wouldn’t ask art advise from people like that, who’s the better option?
I never said “your work sucks man” I said he lacks the know how to get better and if he enjoys it, he should seek that knowledge, and start with the basics.
I even gave him a golf analogy, how PC can you be?
