50 Facts About The U.S. Economy That Will Shock You

“Even though most Americans have become very frustrated with this economy, the reality is that the vast majority of them still have no idea just how bad our economic decline has been or how much trouble we are going to be in if we don’t make dramatic changes immediately,” writes The Economic Collapse (TEC).
For those unfamiliar with this site, TEC is an economic blog that regularly compiles a comprehensive list of the most startling and unsettling facts about the U.S. economy.
Why? Because Americans need to understand that U.S. economy is precariously balanced on the edge of full-blown collapse.
“If we do not educate the American people about how deathly ill the U.S. economy has become, then they will just keep falling for the same old lies that our politicians keep telling them. Just ‘tweaking’ things here and there is not going to fix this economy,” the site explains.
Indeed, America’s economic situation has become increasingly unstable. However, what’s arguably more disconcerting than the state of the U.S. economy is the fact many Americans are largely–if not completely–unaware of just how serious things have become.
“America is consuming far more wealth than it is producing and our debt is absolutely exploding,” TEC explains. “If we stay on this current path, an economic collapse is inevitable. Hopefully the crazy economic numbers from 2011 that I have included in this article will be shocking enough to wake some people up.”
It might behoove Blaze readers to share the facts listed below with family and friends.
“If we all work together, hopefully we can get millions of people to wake up and realize that ‘business as usual’ will result in a national economic apocalypse,” writes TEC.
Here are the 50 economic numbers from 2011 that will shock you (via The Economic Collapse):
1. A staggering 48 percent of all Americans are either considered to be “low income” or are living in poverty.
2. Approximately 57 percent of all children in the United States are living in homes that are either considered to be “low income” or impoverished.
3. If the number of Americans that “wanted jobs” was the same today as it was back in 2007, the “official” unemployment rate put out by the U.S. government would be up to 11 percent.
4. The average amount of time that a worker stays unemployed in the United States is now over 40 weeks.
5. One recent survey found that 77 percent of all U.S. small businesses do not plan to hire any more workers.
6. There are fewer payroll jobs in the United States today than there were back in 2000 even though we have added 30 million extra people to the population since then.
7. Since December 2007, median household income in the United States has declined by a total of 6.8 percent once you account for inflation.
8. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 16.6 million Americans were self-employed back in December 2006. Today, that number has shrunk to 14.5 million.
9. A Gallup poll from earlier this year found that approximately one out of every five Americans that do have a job consider themselves to be underemployed.
10. According to author Paul Osterman, about 20 percent of all U.S. adults are currently working jobs that pay poverty-level wages.
11. Back in 1980, less than 30 percent of all jobs in the United States were low income jobs. Today, more than 40 percent of all jobs in the United States are low income jobs.
12. Back in 1969, 95 percent of all men between the ages of 25 and 54 had a job. In July, only 81.2 percent of men in that age group had a job.
13. One recent survey found that one out of every three Americans would not be able to make a mortgage or rent payment next month if they suddenly lost their current job.
14. The Federal Reserve recently announced that the total net worth of U.S. households declined by 4.1 percent in the 3rd quarter of 2011 alone.
15. According to a recent study conducted by the BlackRock Investment Institute, the ratio of household debt to personal income in the United States is now 154 percent.
16. As the economy has slowed down, so has the number of marriages. According to a Pew Research Center analysis, only 51 percent of all Americans that are at least 18 years old are currently married. Back in 1960, 72 percent of all U.S. adults were married.
17. The U.S. Postal Service has lost more than 5 billion dollars over the past year.
18. In Stockton, California home prices have declined 64 percent from where they were at when the housing market peaked.
19. Nevada has had the highest foreclosure rate in the nation for 59 months in a row.
20. If you can believe it, the median price of a home in Detroit is now just $6000.
21. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 18 percent of all homes in the state of Florida are sitting vacant. That figure is 63 percent larger than it was just ten years ago.
22. New home construction in the United States is on pace to set a brand new all-time record low in 2011.
23. 19 percent of all American men between the ages of 25 and 34 are now living with their parents.
24. Electricity bills in the United States have risen faster than the overall rate of inflation for five years in a row.
25. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, health care costs accounted for just 9.5 percent of all personal consumption back in 1980. Today they account for approximately 16.3 percent.
26. One study found that approximately 41 percent of all working age Americans either have medical bill problems or are currently paying off medical debt.
27. If you can believe it, one out of every seven Americans has at least 10 credit cards.
28. The United States spends about 4 dollars on goods and services from China for every one dollar that China spends on goods and services from the United States.
29. It is being projected that the U.S. trade deficit for 2011 will be 558.2 billion dollars.
30. The retirement crisis in the United States just continues to get worse. According to the Employee Benefit Research Institute, 46 percent of all American workers have less than $10,000 saved for retirement, and 29 percent of all American workers have less than $1,000 saved for retirement.
31. Today, one out of every six elderly Americans lives below the federal poverty line.
32. According to a study that was just released, CEO pay at America’s biggest companies rose by 36.5 percent in just one recent 12 month period.
33. Today, the “too big to fail” banks are larger than ever. The total assets of the six largest U.S. banks increased by 39 percent between September 30, 2006 and September 30, 2011.
34. The six heirs of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton have a net worth that is roughly equal to the bottom 30 percent of all Americans combined.
35. According to an analysis of Census Bureau data done by the Pew Research Center, the median net worth for households led by someone 65 years of age or older is 47 times greater than the median net worth for households led by someone under the age of 35.
36. If you can believe it, 37 percent of all U.S. households that are led by someone under the age of 35 have a net worth of zero or less than zero.
37. A higher percentage of Americans is living in extreme poverty (6.7 percent) than has ever been measured before.
38. Child homelessness in the United States is now 33 percent higher than it was back in 2007.
39. Since 2007, the number of children living in poverty in the state of California has increased by 30 percent.
40. Sadly, child poverty is absolutely exploding all over America. According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, 36.4 percent of all children that live in Philadelphia are living in poverty, 40.1 percent of all children that live in Atlanta are living in poverty, 52.6 percent of all children that live in Cleveland are living in poverty and 53.6 percent of all children that live in Detroit are living in poverty.
41. Today, one out of every seven Americans is on food stamps and one out of every four American children is on food stamps.
42. In 1980, government transfer payments accounted for just 11.7 percent of all income. Today, government transfer payments account for more than 18 percent of all income.
43. A staggering 48.5 percent of all Americans live in a household that receives some form of government benefits. Back in 1983, that number was below 30 percent.
44. Right now, spending by the federal government accounts for about 24 percent of GDP. Back in 2001, it accounted for just 18 percent.
45. For fiscal year 2011, the U.S. federal government had a budget deficit of nearly 1.3 trillion dollars. That was the third year in a row that our budget deficit has topped one trillion dollars.
46. If Bill Gates gave every single penny of his fortune to the U.S. government, it would only cover the U.S. budget deficit for about 15 days.
47. Amazingly, the U.S. government has now accumulated a total debt of 15 trillion dollars. When Barack Obama first took office the national debt was just 10.6 trillion dollars.
48. If the federal government began right at this moment to repay the U.S. national debt at a rate of one dollar per second, it would take over 440,000 years to pay off the national debt.
49. The U.S. national debt has been increasing by an average of more than 4 billion dollars per day since the beginning of the Obama administration.
50. During the Obama administration, the U.S. government has accumulated more debt than it did from the time that George Washington took office to the time that Bill Clinton took office.
Of course, after going through all these numbers, the obvious question is, “how has it come to this?” The Economic Collapse has a simple answer:
. . . the heart of our economic problems is the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve is a perpetual debt machine, it has almost completely destroyed the value of the U.S. dollar and it has an absolutely nightmarish track record of incompetence. If the Federal Reserve system had never been created, the U.S. economy would be in far better shape. The federal government needs to shut down the Federal Reserve and start issuing currency that is not debt-based.
But who among America’s leaders has the will and determination to do this? Judging by how the Obama administration has conducted itself thus far, it probably won’t consider (let alone implement) any of the suggestions mentioned in the above. Therefore, that leaves only the GOP candidates.
Who among them has the best chance to restore economic stability? Who is the most likely to return the U.S. to prosperity?
“Hopefully next year more Americans than ever will wake up, because 2012 is going to represent a huge turning point for this country,” TEC writes.
Indeed, 2012 may be one of the biggest turning points this country has ever seen.

One of his books, “The Revolution” will let you in on the scam that is our current governmental system.
Bring individual liberty and the true free market system back into the light of the United States of America. Elect Ron Paul for President of the United States.
Otherwise, strap in and get ready for a quite wild ride.

Either explain how he has been “in on it” or please shut up. We’re tired of hearing your baseless accusations against Dr. Paul. None of those stupid assertions regurgitated by you zombies can stand even superficial inquiry and are never proven true. Just like Dr. Paul had to school “Martial Bachmann” on the IAEA report, with her crazy eyes and vote for the Patriot Act Extension.
From my research, Dr. Paul has been spearheading the fight against the destruction of the economy by targetting the Federal Reserve.

Even if elected he would never actually end the Federal Reserve because he is smart enough to understand what that would do to our economy. He is also smart enough to hold the right assets when he goes about campaigning against the central bank.

I defy you to point to any significant accomplishment that Paul has in his political career – other than getting a bunch of fools like you to drink his impotent cool-aid. So put up or shut up. I would imagine that Paul is not stupid and does have gold reserves, just as I, because he worked hard when he was young to become a doctor. Are you aware that doctors make pretty good money? If he did not have gold, it would mean he was stupid. Paul predicted the attack by terrosists on U.S. soil, nobody listened. Paul predicted the housing bubble, nobody listened. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink. One of Paul‘s bills he put up was to restore the second amendment to it’s original intent, but he was fought on it. He does everything according to the Constitution, but is ignored. He is only one man, but he is a loyal man to the Constitution, which is a lot more than I can say about others in Washington or running for POTUS. Ron Paul (The only true Tea) 2012.

Also, what does working hard have to do with owning gold? What would you call a congressman who made numerous speeches and based a presidential campaign on the economic principle that a certain commodity that he owned large amounts of should be more valuable? I’d call them the same as every other congressman.

What provoked your ad hominem personal attack? You do realize that your comment is recognized by everyone as trolling…don’t you? You do realize that the “living in mom’s basement” attack is unoriginal and old… don’t you? Its played out like rockers wearing spandex. I hope you realize that attacking and slandering me is a fruitless endeavor… it doesn’t effect Ron Paul or his campaign whatsoever…
Paul is the only one to put forth a bill to audit the Fed every session, to be stonewalled by NEOCONS and LIBERALS because neocons and liberals are one and the same. They’re both warmongers who support social programs (which means wasting my money).
So to say that he hasn‘t accomplished anything is a joke considering that we wouldn’t even be talking about these issues (like the FED) if he hadn’t interjected real issues, we would be talking about who cheated on their wife, why Michelle Bachmann acts like a Tea Party member but supports the Liberty-trampling Patriot Act, why John Huntsman was in the middle of a Jasmine Revolution in China, why Romneycare is a failure and a template for Obamacare, etc. Fact of the matter is that it isn’t my JOB to inform you of what Ron Paul has done. That’s YOUR problem, not mine.
So…troll away! I hope you come up with some more witty personal attacks, however. The mom’s basement thing is just OLD!!! At least TRY…

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 2:43am@EDDARD. Rep. Paul would not end the Fed immediately. First he would have it audited, and allow for competing currency to be established. Here’s an article from Peter Brimelow about how that would work (http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig/brimelow3.html). This leads to the idea of “sound money” backed by silver, gold, or another commodity more specifically for trade within a given group.
As far as reestablishing the Second Amendment, repeal of the ‘38 NFA and the ’86 GCA, the open and concealed carry laws of the states, cities and municipalities would then hedge between the 10th and 2nd Amendments. As for original intent, it’s clear that an agrarian society would not produce the 2nd to protect the rights of hunters, or as a protection against thieves and criminals. The criminal power they were worried about could only be exerted by a government, foreign or domestic.
“Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined.” -Patrick Henry

Posted on December 18, 2011 at 5:28pmToo bad there was not any statistics on government debt at the local level. The aging population means that the average income is going to be declining for a while. The appetite for more and bigger stuff on the part of city and county governments is not going to be satisfied. In my state, county governments are ranging from zero to over $3000 dollars per capita for county debt alone. When a city goes broke, the county usually tries to fill in the lost services. The borrowing is still strong because the rates are still low. Ball parks, green ways, railroad right of way for rail trails, and industrial parks that don’t have a prayer of having a client are legion in the list of “must have items.” Ironically, the high unemployment only seems to justify further spending on goofy stuff like lights along the Interstate to help bring in business. This “open for business” lighting is so well engrained in the current mass hysteria over economic development, it is politically incorrect to even doubt it.

Posted on December 18, 2011 at 11:02pmNo you are incorrect. The solution is not defeating Barack Obama. That is only one step on the long and hard road we have to travel. We do need a revolution in this country. But not a political one. Or a social one. Every one of us needs to have a personal revolution. When we realize that the only way to prosperity is hard work, and that we need to elect people who actually mean what they say and tell us the truth. We need to learn that voting for the “lesser of two evils” is still evil. We need to learn that the answers will not come through politics. Nor will they come through government nor money nor anything of the sort. The answers come through US.
When we have our principles once again on the correct path, then we can begin recovering. But it will be a long and hard road before we ever reach that point.

Posted on December 18, 2011 at 5:20pmIt is very simple. Fiat money causes inflation. ( By design )
A currency based on a gold and silver standard would have minimal, to no inflation.
What is more shocking than these lame figures is that the “United States Government” is a Corporation Established in 1871 (ever hear of D.C.?)
More shocking than that is the fact that this “Corp U.S.” needed a loan from from the Federal Reserve PRIVATE Bank in 1913 ( Federal Reserve Act )
In 1933 the “U.S.Corp” went bankrupt and defaulted on the Loan. ( The Emergency banking Act )
What is most shocking is that the “United States Government” Pledged it’s government, America’s land ,PEOPLE and Future CITIZENS as Collateral for the Debt owed.
Birth certificate became law in all states in 1933 and Social Security became law in 1936.
These are Bonds that are held by the revievers of the debt. These are interest bearing bonds (taxes) for the creditors.
In 1944 under the bretton woods Agreement, the “Corp U.S.” was quit claim deeeded to the IMF, World Bank and U.N.
The U.N. owns and runs the United States behind the Curtain.

I know many people that will actually say, ‘Well its just to scary to think about so I just don’t think about it’. I am afraid for our country and our people; I am mostly afraid for my family and I am lucky enough to have land away from large cities and have been preparing for a while … for those poor ignorant people that are to afraid to wake up – they will be forced to wake up in a hell they cannot even imagine.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 2:55pmGood afternoon RightAllAlong,
Thanks for the compliment, I am just trying to speak the truth, in an age where the truth brings persecution, though that has never really changed throughout human history. I agree with your take, and I second it. I would like to point out, that while the collapse is inevitable, it is also our best chance to take our freedoms back. I honestly believe it is our only chance. I heard once a long time ago that danger and opportunity walk hand in hand. If enough of our fellow countrymen and women have not woken up by that time, the new world order of Global finance and control will rear its head and take control before the people know what it is they have excepted. If the people are to afraid to look to themselves Liberty will die. If enough have woken up and resist a one world currency, and have the fortitude to depend on themselves then we can truly restore and for the first time in history create a truly free and peaceful society. It is up to us, but the Patriots only have Freedom & Liberty to look forward to no matter what takes place.
You have my respect RightAllAlong, and all the others who awoken to reality.

Let’s see some numbers on how many Americans are growing their own food compared to three years ago. How many are stockpiling food and supplies compared to three years ago. How many have purchased guns compared to three years ago. How many have increased their cash on hand compared to three years ago.

Posted on December 19, 2011 at 12:44pmHistorically, the last time the nation was THIS polarized politically and had a government that was THIS dysfunctional, was right before the CIVIL WAR. It would surprise me to see history repeat itself (sic) although it almost always does, however, I would look for FIRST: California and Illinois to default, followed by Texas to secede. This will lead to a gradual steady Balkanization of the remaining regions of what was once a mighty united nation. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Key issues for the 21st century disassembly of the USA are Welfare, Entitlement, Immigration, Education, Right to bear arms, Property Rights, Criminal Justice, Language, Borders, Culture, Debt (personal and public), Personal Security, Financial Security, FOOD.

Posted on December 20, 2011 at 6:18amAmericans, we who are ever looking for a great leader to save them, we have forgotten our origins, our founders, and we do not recognize or even care of the importance of our past and how we came to be a great nation. Instead of rolling up our sleeves and getting to work to strengthen our nation and learn about our cultural heritage many of us stand idly by and wait for someone ells, a “great leader” to come and do it for us.
If we as a nation are to continue being great we must all follow the example of our founders; that is we must educate ourselves and seek to improve and better our lives and the lives of those within our spheres of influence, whether it be in our homes, our communities, or even on a national level. By doing so we can each rise up and become that great leader we’ve been waiting for and by becoming that person we can all make a difference.
We are fragmented as a society and unity is needed or our cultural heritage will be lost forever. We need to be brave push aside traditions that hold us back or divide us and reach out with compassion to help those around us. Think of how much better off, we as a people would be, if our desires for success and progress were solely for the benefit of those around us. There would be no limits as to what we could achieve; no barriers could hold us back. Democrat or Republican, believer or non-believer, black or white, gay or straight, could all be replaced by one word; American.

I have a 1911.45 ACP, an AK 47 that uses 7.62 x 39, a .22 LR Colt M4, a S&W .38 special, and a Winchester Defender 1200 12 g. I already have 500 rounds of 7.62 x 39 FMJ (Fiocchi) long term storage ammo. Thanks for any advice!!!

I am sorry, but being a woman has nothing to do with it. Ignorance is a choice not a disease. Stop making us ladies look so bad. If though that is how you truly feel, just sit there and try to look pretty. Let your man figure it out for you.

But wait, what if we have somebody like Bush who makes war “off the books” and lowers taxes for the rich…and even expands a social program (Medicare D) that mostly helps “big pharma.”

Posted on December 18, 2011 at 4:30pmI agree. But our congress is also spending money like it grows on trees. Statistics show that the longer people don’t work, the less likely they will return to work. What the unemployment numbers don’t show is the number of people that gave up and went to welfare. In my state it pays more to be on welfare, than to work. NY Welfare=Free housing, food, clothes, car, bus tickets, cell phone, medical, pharmacy, even the kids have their own cards.

This problem is way beyond Barrack I can’t do it without a teleprompter Obama. The problem is & has been the entire government, for decades on top of decades. Both left and right are responsible. The Tea party is asleep at the wheel. If you can’t break free of the repub versus dem mentality you will forever remain a slave to these people.
Our founders saw all of this and gave us the answers we need. I’ll quote one “United we Stand, Divided we fall”. What have you done to unite? Or are you aiding in the divisions?
We need to mind our own business, and allow people to live their own lives. That goes for both here and abroad. The more the government is in our lives, the worse our lives become.
