6-Year-Old Boy Accused of Sexual Harassment For Repeating Pop Song Lyric

AURORA, Colo. (AP/The Blaze) — A 6-year-old boy was suspended from his suburban Denver school for three days after school officials said he told a girl “I’m sexy and I know it,” a line from a popular song.

D’Avonte Meadows, a first-grader at Sable Elementary School in Aurora, is accused of sexual harassment and disrupting other students, according to a letter the school district sent to his mother after he was sent home Wednesday.

DAvonte Meadows, Six Year Old from Denver, is Suspended for Repeating a Line from LMFAOs Im Sexy and I Know It

D'Avonte Meadows

School officials issued a statement saying they couldn’t discuss the case, but they pointed out a school board policy that defines sexual harassment as any unwelcome sexual advance. There is no age limit.

The Aurora Police Department said it was not involved in the case because laws only cover children ages 10 and older.

D‘Avonte’s mother, Stephanie Meadows, said her son doesn‘t know the meaning of sexual harassment and it’s the second time he has gotten in trouble for quoting “Sexy and I Know It.” The song by the duo LMFAO was at the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart for two weeks in January.

“I’m just, I’m floored,” Stephanie Meadows told KMGH-TV ( http://bit.ly/KaXY7f ). “They‘re going to look at him like he’s a pervert. And it’s like, that’s not fair to him.”

The Associated Press could not locate the Meadows family for comment.

Aurora Public Schools issued a statement Thursday saying it is trying to provide an equal learning environment for all students.

“We have policies and protocol in place to prevent any disruption to the learning environment. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to discuss appropriate disciplinary consequences about a specific student,” wrote spokeswoman Paula Hans.

Denver attorney Craig Silverman said elementary school students have the same rights to free speech as adults as long as they understand and follow the rules. He said school policies should allow for exceptions.

“Sometimes when you go to a zero-tolerance policy, you end up with a zero-sense policy,” he said.

D‘Avonte’s suspension comes as the Colorado Legislature considers a measure that would eliminate zero-tolerance discipline policies related to violence and weapons that were enacted after the Columbine High School shootings.

It‘s a response to cases in which students have been punished for bringing fake guns or butter knives to school and doesn’t address sexual harassment policies. However, Sen. Linda Newell, the bill’s sponsor, said the measure would also direct school districts to consider alternative forms of discipline, such as remediation decided by a student’s peers, in all kinds of discipline cases.

The bill has passed the state Senate and is awaiting action by the full House.

Lawmakers who worked on the measure say zero-tolerance policies have disrupted too many students’ education for minor offenses.

As examples, lawmakers have cited Colorado students who were referred to police for trying to break up a fight or having a replica gun on school grounds.

They also point to cases such as at least two in Florida in which girls, 10 and 11 years old at the time, were arrested for allegedly bringing a plastic butter knife and a small kitchen knife to school.

Under Colorado’s Senate Bill 46, the only cause for mandatory expulsion would be bringing a real firearm to school.

I would be apt to kick some buttacus over that. That poor little kid will have to suffer being expelled from school. Those sorry teachers probably do every sin in the book and then some and have the gall to judge that little kid. I truly despise stupidity. There must really not be a cure for it and I believe stupidity is catching from the top down.

Maybe it was cute the first time he sung it, but everytime after that (if he was asked not to sing it), not so much. His mother did say that this is the second time that he has been disciplined for the same exact thing. How many times was he asked to NOT sing the lyrics before he got in trouble the first time.

      Just asking, not condemning

If they can expel students for bringing nail clippers or using over-the-counter medicine under the Zero tolerance policy (under the grounds that they are a weapon and drugs, respectively), it was only a matter of time until they suspended a kid over song lyrics.

The Zero tolerance policy must be eradicated. It’s a lazy, faulty disciplinary tool that turns ordinary kids into criminals. At the age of 6, D’Avonte is too young to understand the concept of sex, let alone sexual harassment. Was it too much work to call him to the principal’s office and ask his mother to come over and discuss the issue? Instead, they were too lazy and suspended him instead.

Looks like Sable elementary employs teachers whose IQ’s matches their shoe sizes. Hopefully D‘Avonte’s mom will enroll him in a new school with smarter teachers.

This is outrageous! I was in shock to see this 6 yr. old lives here in Aurora. When are adults going to learn that you can’t have it both ways. The obama admin is pushing kids to learn about sex in kindergarten down to even knowing what to use for protection, and they are to learn how to be tolerant of the “gay” life infiltrating our lives. Then, we boot a 6 yr. old out of school for singing a song that he probably picked up off the radio…one that obama probably sings to himself every day! Unbelievable!

Every time an ad comes on tv for viagra or other sexual gratification crap, I have to turn the channel…I am furious that anyone has to listen to this it. It appears that sexual gratification is what everyone should be most concerned about! The consequences of what our children are learning are appalling. And we wonder where 6 yr olds pick up this stuff. Bible scripture tells us parents are responsible for training their children…not the bloody gov’t! And, God will hold us accountable.

The public schools are Out Of Contol in SO many ways…
Their administrators are petty, rigid bureaucrats who know only Rules, Rules, Rules.

No one under them has anything like a spine. “The Right Thing” to do has been ‘educated’ out of them in favor of their bureacratic rules. Oh, its not Just the NEA/union thing. They are the Frontline in the Communist takeover, and most of them are still oblivious to the fact thet they are mere tools in the Dumbing Down Of the country. They think they are being altruistic, they think they are doing really good things by ‘educating’ the country‘s young’uns. But then, they are products of that self-same “public education system” .
Long after I’d left public education (c. 1993), I read a great article online by Charlotte Iserbyt on “Deliberate Dumbing Down” of America’s public education. It hit-home on So may points, it literally Chilled me to the bone… Google her, read everything she’s published. Agree or disagree, she is spot-on regarding ‘dumbing-down’ and how it has been a planned flailure.

Home school your kids now….Do it….Do it…! It is not that hard and it is not only a learning experience for the parent, but it is also a great way to bond with your kids. They will respect you and trust you a lot more because you will display an interest in what they are learning. They will trust you more than the system that will fail them. You will not only see an improvement in their grades, but you will see a real interest in the topics. Too busy for your kids education…stop carting them to sports events which mean little to nothing when they graduate. Teach them to be individuals first and team players second.

I’m a grandmother of a 6yr. old little boy, and if I heard him saying anything I didn’t think was appropriate, I would tell him why it wasn’t right. We have rules, and he loves it. He even tells his friends the rules and they make up new ones. If he was disciplines once before, his parent should have told him to stop of else. I noticed he was black. Another story of a black wanting attention just like our current “whatever in the white house”. He is doing nothing for his race, even tho he is half white. KCares – I don’t think it has anything to do with the race of the child. Kids repeat things they hear and often the adults hear it in a different context. One day, while we were trying to go to a meeting, I remarked to my spouse that “we were tied up” in traffic and that because of major construction, it was likely to be that way for a long time. Our son repeated that we had been “tied up” to another child and that started an inquiry as to whether or not he was being force-ably restrained at home. Art Linkletter had a television show called “Kids Say the Darnest Things” and yes, the kids came out with some real whoppers.

I’m in Colorado. My nephew, in high school, got a participation trophy today… His teachers are, he tells me, constantly telling the students about how great Obama is. I’ve read some of his assignments which were clearly omitting facts or pieces of history for the Progressive Liberal agenda. It seems this city is headed the way of California. At least it’s not as crazy here as in Boulder yet… but still, little kids wearing dreadlocks, pink or blue or green or purple hair, nose rings, pierced eyebrows, wearing leather jackets over their hoodies in 80+ degree weather, pants hanging around their knees… there are A LOT of SERIOUSLY messed up kids around here. The college kids aren’t much better.

What ever happened to common sense? For most of the people “in charge” it seems to be an alien concept. Children are being educationally lobotomized, robbed of problem solving for themselves, and turned into politically correct robots, unable cope with the rigors of living. Teach the Golden Rule, it covers EVERYTHING. So much of the ridiculousness would disappear.

Lawyers have brought us this problem. If the girl tells her parents about this boy and what he is saying and that she told the teacher but nothing was done, then the Lawyers are called in to sue the school. This was the initial response (out of fear) in years past, once the lawyer threat was becoming more real all across this nation, the zealots moved in earnest to PC everyone about how to think, act and talk to one another from military lectures on the subject to corporate boardrooms and in house employee training sessions. Color outside those lines and its straight to jail with you.

We have lost so much innocent freedom in this country the toll of it may never be told. Maybe by 2076 our three hundreth independence celebration can the Frontline/PBS REAL story of American history be told. I can only hope if we make it that far that those who are alive can know the truth of what happened in our time. 1976 to present.

You hit the nail on the head. The crowning glory of the public indoctrination system in the US is their success in getting rid of “common sense.” You see it over and over again. Take CA as the center of this movement. They have a law that a young girl, no matter her age, can pop into her local Planned Parenthood Clinic and get an abortion. To recover, she goes to a tanning salon, but is not allowed in since she is under 18 and doesn’t have parental consent. What message is being sent with that? But then they top that ridiculousness and go for the sublime. If the police pull you over for a moving violation and discover that you have no license or are in the country illegally or as Clownitano now wants us to say “unlawfully present,” the police cannot impound you vehicle because it would cause such a level of financial hardship that it would rise almost to the level of cruel and unusual punishment. However, if you are a citizen or lawfully present, the police can impound your vehicle. So doesn’t that mean that those unlawfully present have more rights than the citizens?
