Twitter was abuzz Sunday night with the usual chatter: plans for the upcoming week, one-liners from the Sunday morning news talkshows, polarizing comments on Tim Tebow’s latest miracle victory. But many were also talking about the gripping report airing on 60 Minutes, which took a heart-wrenching close look at several of the 16 Million American children currently living in poverty. The report focused on children homeless and living in cars in central Florida, an area of the country where the construction industry had especially collapsed.
Entitled “Hard Times Generation,” CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley led the report looking into the lives of several impoverished families, including the Metzger family of Arielle, 15, Austin, 13, and their father Tom. The children lost their mother at an early age and have been living out of a truck since foreclosure took their house five months ago. Tom is an unemployed carpenter who has been unable to find work since Florida’s construction industry fell apart. Here is a brief transcript of Pelley’s discussion with Arielle and Austin:
“Pelley: How long have you been living in this truck?
Arielle Metzger: About five months.
Pelley: What’s that like?
Arielle Metzger: It’s an adventure.
Austin Metzger: That’s how we see it.
Pelley: When kids at school ask you where you live, what do you tell ‘em?
Austin Metzger: When they see the truck they ask me if I live in it, and when I hesitate they kinda realize. And they say they won’t tell anybody.
Arielle Metzger: Yeah it’s not really that much an embarrassment. I mean, it’s only life. You do what you need to do, right?”
The report followed the day-to-day lives of the Metzgers and several other Seminole County children beginning their days waking up and getting dressed in cars, brushing their teeth at gas stations, and joining classmates, 1,100 who are also homeless, at county schools. Whether it be seeing their living conditions, watching some paint motel walls to earn a night’s stay, or hearing some children retell the terrifying experience of awakening in a car to witness family members being robbed for the few dollars they have, the report gives a troubling look into the hardships and astounding challenges for some children in the nation we all strive to ensure continues to be the greatest in the world:
Seminole County Public Schools have set up a website to help homeless kids like those who were brave enough to speak with CBS, as well as the many others living in poverty : http://seminolehomelesskids.org.

I understand that we had around one million muslims in the US in 2009..now we have imported 2 million more for a grand total of 3 million…I guess we have to spend all of our tax dollars to bankrupt this country..Did you know that all the bridge building and constrution jobs here in America has just been farmed out to China? Posted on November 27, 2011 at 11:36pmThis was a great piece. GOD is going to hold someone responsible for all this. There is no excuse for what is happening in this nation except greed, power and lust for more of the same.
The problem is that I believe that it’s going to get much worse before it is all said and done.
Where are the wealthy offering to help? Hanging onto their wealth? We are being tested to see who will help and who will standby and watch. Will we “wash the feet” of those less fortunate or pass them by on the street?
I know what my family and I are doing for Christmas. Do you all?

True story… Many years ago I was down on my luck and spent an entire N.J. winter living in my pick-up truck down at the end of a dead end road. It was not fun but I survived and the experience made me stronger. And what was my secret to crawling out from that situation? I worked hard, and asked for guidance from God. That was during Jimmy Carters presidency. Gee, talk about coincidences.

That drives me crazy that the state can take your kids from you. Anyone of you, imagine misfortune coming your way .. then all of suddenly, the state comes in and takes your kids. Cause they will. Posted on November 28, 2011 at 10:31am@MARINE 1 You are correct and right on the money. @thepatriotdave you have no clue what is undermining the economy in the US and it started under Reagan. 1) The so called free trade agreements which support the wealthy exploitation of labor in China and Southeast Asia. 2) The concentration of wealth in the US slows down both the amount and speed at which money flows through the economy. 3) The increase in the black economy which includes everything from illegal activity, to small businesses that hire illegal workers, individuals and small businesses that participate in cash transactions and of course large corporations that shield their money in off shore accounts. The items in number 3 are the primary reason tax revenues are inadequate. The response to the kids in this report really shows how selfish the “me generation” is in this country and why the baby boomers need to pay off the federal debt they benefited from.

To Tom Metzger,
I hope you have access to a computer, I don’t know how else to contact you. If you are willing to make a move to Texas (another adventure), let me know here on this thread. Anyone who knows him, please feel free to have him contact me. This is an honest offer, we want nothing from you but to offer you a chance to rebuild your life.
We are growing like gangbusters, jobs are plentiful (my 19 year old has one job and two more offers for $10+ ph, no state income tax). We have an empty nice camper on our large property that sleeps 8, full hook-ups, fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, full bathroom, heat/ac and you could stay in it until you get back on your feet. It is not the Ritz, but a chance to start over. In return no boozing, no drugs, and just help out around the farm once in a while with the garden and such (kids included) and the kids have to like animals.
We (myself and my husband of 24 years) have 5 kids ourselves, 3 are still at home (19, 12&8), none of them have ever gotten so much as a detention at school. I am a stay at home mom so someone is here for the kids 24hrs a day.
I recognize, for some reason, your name (hockey?). We left the Sarasota area 10 years ago to find work after Andersen went under. Again, this is a legitimate offer.
(P.S. both my husband and I have coached youth sports and have had complete background checks)

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:55pmThere are more homeless families, trying to make it in Florida, because of the warm climate, and the tourist industry jobs.
I have worked in charity for a long time. There is usually always a better choice, the adult is not mentioning. The one family with the mother, who had passed-on when the children were young, could qualify the children for social security. In addition, the unemployed dad would qualify for welfare, and food stamps. In the meantime, his application for HUD housing would be making it thru processing.
On the other hand, we always want other family involved in helping, like grandmoms, or adult siblings, etc. But, my work has been with Christian services, which try to move the entire family unit, to be responsible to give help, and to receive.
There are plenty of programs to help, both govt and church based. However, those in need sometimes resist the thought of a pattern change in their lives, even when it would be best for children. Part of the work, is to help them to move in the best direction, for all involved, at the time, with a plan mapped out, for the future.
It’s a hard place to be. But, living in a car, with children, for longer than a month, is not a good thing for them. Helping the adults realize this, make a plan to get the kids in a safer, healthy place, and a good plan for the future is best. Takes emotional support system for all, in every case.

What if the Father is afraid to get into that pattern. I don’t care what anyone says, the problem with our welfare is that there is no end.
Hopefully, private citizens will ban together to make a difference in these situations. A hand up, not a hand out.

Welfare is supposed to be only a hand-up. Unfortunately, for some, it’s not an embarrassment, but a skill learned, of how to work the system.
Like I said, my work is in a Christian-based organization, the St Vincent de Paul Society. God-given dignity of life is at the core. That involves a plan, prayer, financial temporary programs, and a lot of follow-up.
Most cases I have helped had a 95% second option or choice, for the family. They just wanted the easy way, which was money further bills, no questions asked.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 11:27pmTeripa — In Pensacola I used to work with Emerald Coast Ministries – a 18 month transitional housing program for homeless men; and in AZ have worked with the Mt of Olives Lutheran Church groups we call “community corner” informally.
In seven years we have grown from just providing food and clothing weekly, to providing job sourcing and community contacts for housing, jobs, assistance, etc.
I am glad to hear of your efforts, and many people need to understand though that there are non government assistance programs out there; many for families and for single parents with kids who can help, the major problem is being able to get the information to the people, and connect the various groups togeather to help in sharing of resources (which I do know are limited).
May the grace and blessings of God and the Lord be with all who are working to make a difference in this land, for as the Lord told to us, the needy and poor will always be with us; may His generocity and guidance move us to be able to help where and as we are able to do so.

There is definitely going to be an explosion of more people in need.
The church is the best place to get help. But, that’s only if people continue to give, and then, give more. Your giving helps, and God-connected caring, and praying come with the giving.
Caring people, who live in places that are restricting motor home hookups, should get involved to help those families. I mean, maybe there are open campsite for those in need to go. A charity could help pay for that. If the campgrounds are permitted summer only licensing, it should be changed.

At a time when so many people are suffering this man has the audicity to take this money to buy an election? He has caused so much of this. We need to take care of our own country by developing jobs and jump starting the economy. My heart does break for these children. I watched either this program or a simular on a few months ago. I hate that any child has to suffer. If we get this country back on its feet there will be fewer families in this situation. It will make it easier to help those truely in need. Many churches work within their areas to help families and get little or no credit for it.Basically what will happen under the progressives will simply make all families equal? So all of our children will suffer as well? That’s a great idea…..NOT

Posted on November 28, 2011 at 10:26amSome churches are more worried about saving the planet. Some churches teach that if you are poor, it is because you do not have enough faith since God wants you to be rich. Some churches are unable to help because they need the money for their building program. Some churches don’t want to teach that there is a relationship between poverty and sin, so they can not really make an impact on poverty. The government encourages bad behavior and sin in such a way that the church is less able to wrap its arms around the totality of the problem. Locally, I don’t know how wide spread this is, but payday loans are the last impossible trap that some working poor people enter. Many get into them because of of the high and punishing reconnection fees or the last emergency for which there is no emergency fund. Once the means of transportation breaks down, so does your ability to get a job. Some churches are fatigued from supporting the dishonest who just have a drug habit and go from church to church with the same hard luck story.

I can not phathom living out of a car, truck, motel, or whatever, with my children. They have always had a roof over their head. And when the economy took a dump, we moved into a cheaper house, got rid of cable, started couponing, and other money saving measures. I am also a business owner. To ensure that my business kept making money, I lowered my prices, and guess what, I’ve never been busier. My point: there is NO EXCUSE for any child ever to be “homeless” in The United States of America. The State should intervene. Report Post »What you’re advocating is the destruction of families and the total devastation of not only the children but the parents! The foster care system in this country is far worse than leaving the children with loving, caring parents who have fallen on hard times.
If you add insult to injury by charging the parents child support what happens? They, being unemployed will fall behind. In many states that means they will lose their drivers licenses and receive further penalties, such as loss of visitation rights. What happens then?
People, parents who were once productive members of society, who have fallen on hard times, will get back on their feet again. Give them the chance to try. Sometimes they need a helping hand and sometimes they need a little push to get moving again but don’t destroy their families as punishment for failing. It’s not right. It’s not American. I must disagree. It is not the collective’s job to dictate how these parents raise their children, even in these sad conditions. It is the individuals duty, especially as a believer in Christ to support and help these families.
If we are a “Christian” nation we would act as one and help our neighbor’s freely to serve them. I understand your frustration with those who lost their guidance and value materials over taking care of their responsibility but we will not turn that mentality thru the State. We will beat it thru the action of love.
Imagine if every “Christian” family strived to find a way to support one of these families that have given up and how that would mentally impact these folks. The fact that most “Christians” don’t shows the state of us who live cozy in our homes, heat, with food calling ourselves “Christians”.
The poor will always be with us and we are always to serve them.
The saddest part isn’t these kids living in the streets. The saddest part are those living in a 5 bedroom house who only use 3 bedrooms and don’t open up the other two to help these homeless and call themselves followers of Christ. The same ones with 3 big screens and computers but say they can’t afford to directly support these families.

Report Post »Okie from Muskogee

I implied no such thing but you did just project…Nope I don’t know anything but what you post.
I did imply believing the state should step in is progressive mentality. That is truth. That only makes the problem worse….
It is the responsibility of the family with 5 bedrooms and only using 3 to help their neighbor who’s homeless. They shouldn’t be forced to but spiritually and morally it is their duty. It’s the message of Jesus Christ.
Rescue missions are simply extra rooms families pay for to shelter the homeless. What’s the difference in a rescue mission and those extra rooms not used in such house?
All I’m saying is if you have extra room and someone is homeless and you think aw the rescue mission will help them, then you are the same as the parent who you complained over buying smart phones over taking care of their kids.
I don’t see God smiling over say me having two unused rooms while so many sleep in the streets. If we as a Nation took the message of Christ and free willingly helped these people thru our own homes we would change and help many.
Having the State step in won’t do jack….
Report Post »Ditto Head
Posted on November 28, 2011 at 1:36amI did just project? Is that psychobabble for “Aha, you admitted it?” What the hell ever.
The difference is that a rescue mission is a church ministry specifically set up to provide for the homeless. My home is where I feed, bath, teach, and protect my children from the world, and prepare them to be a productive member of it. Bringing [irresponsible] strangers into my home would make ME irresponsible in that I could very well be endangering my family. Hey, you want to bring outside influences and drama into the very confines of your children’s refuge, that’s your business. I ain‘t doin’ it. The homeless children are the victims here. They are victims of their parents’ neglect to properly provide for them. The children need to be cared for. I’d also be for having church or state run orphanages like in the old days. At least then the kids would have a home. Any father who does not provide for his own children is worse than a degenerate heathen. That’s Bible.

You make a hell of a lot of sense (not). You think the state should remove children from impoverished homes and place them in foster care? (and the parents pay some sort of support?) OMG! Imagine that the government actually did this. You think taxpayers would fare better? First of all, this would only work if the parents had any money to pay for the foster care support. In all likelihood- they don’t. So the government would still have to step in and fund the foster care program. And lets not forget the court fees and other resources to support such a massive endeavor. And this is just the direct financial costs. Then there is the emotional toll and the lawsuits. There will be lawsuits, that’s a given. Whether it is the parent/s suing the state for taking their kids, or parents suing for the damage caused, or perhaps the litigation brought about because the child was abused while in foster care, the state will pay, the parents will pay, the children will pay, the family unit will pay, and in the long run, all of society will pay. All because of backwards, stupid-ass people such as yourself who think that bigger government is the answer. You are wrong on so many levels that I can not provide an adequate response in the 1500 short characters allotted by the Blaze.

Your house isn’t a Church ministry? Mine is and all believers are suppose to be but ok…..
If you feel you do not have the intelligence and ability to help the homeless and protect your family at the same time not to mention teach your own children by example how to do so, ok.
Helping someone who needs help is not irresponsible. Thinking you cannot is irresponsible.
You want the State to take kids from the parents, worthless or not, and raise them by the values and principles Government sets forth? And you think that is responsible? Hahahahaha! That usually creates the problems that lead to the homeless.
No one is saying the parents are being good parents. I am saying the state won’t fix the parents and the state will more then likely corrupt the kids even more. We believers in Christ can help them both thru love and that love is shown thru helping in free will.
It’s just too easy to make excuses, “bring drama into my home”, while sitting in our nice cozy homes then to actually get up and do something about that. God will hold us accountable, especially those with the empty rooms while these kids sleep on the streets. Thats biblical as well….
Believe as you wish. Just know advocating for the State to be the redeemer is never a solution. Take care!

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:30pmFoster homes for the kids, three jobs for the parents. Mandatotry drug and alcohol programs. Better choices, less toys, lower standards, save, save, save. There is no excuse for this, I call BS. I would personally give them a house with free rent for 1 year, if they would follow my advice and lifestyle choices. But they would never do it, it is easier just to not try. I pity the children who have such crappy role models.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:08pm338.3 million goes to illegals every single year…3.5 billion goes to a country who is sharing nuclear bomb technology with Lybia, North Koria, Iran and China…and how much money have we spent on all the rest of the Muslim countries? WE spent 700 million to refurbish Mosques in arab countries,,we imported how many Haitians? We imported how many Black Samali Muslims? We imported how many Hamaas affiliated Pakistanis and we have homeless people in the USA… I don’t get it.

Posted on November 27, 2011 at 10:48pm@ashestoashes—–You get it ,but we just need all who do get it to vote in 2012.We can turn this country into a place where children grow up as children and parents are left alone by the government.
