A man who robbed a 72-year-old Texas business owner at gunpoint is dead after the owner, a Marine Corps veteran, jumped in his car and chased after him, ramming him against a metal fence.
According to the Houston Chronicle, a tall man forced his way into Kenneth Kobobel, Sr.’s office Friday morning where Kobobel had been chatting with his brother. He put a 9mm handgun to Kobobel’s head, demanded money from them and screamed “You’re dead!”
He emptied the contents of the brother’s wallet and Kobobel handed him $20. Not satisfied with the amount, Kobobel said the man patted him down and upon finding a wad of bills totaling $800 yelled, “You lied to me! You’re dead!”
Kobobel said robber struck him on the head with the barrel of the gun and ran off, warning them to wait before calling 911.
Once he left, Kobobel called 911 and went outside, asking neighbors if they had seen which way he went. He then got into his car and sped off in pursuit.
Kobobel’s son, Kenneth Kobobel, Jr., who pulled up just as his father was leaving, said he wasn’t surprised his father went after the robber.
“He’s an ex-Marine,” he told the Chronicle. “He doesn’t put up with a whole lot of nothing.”
Kobobel said he spotted the robber in a strip mall parking lot, and when the robber saw Kobobel coming he raised his gun and fired at least once. Kobobel rammed him with his car, then did so again when the man prepared to fire again.
Police are calling details about the incident sketchy and are trying to determine if another vehicle might have assisted Kobobel.
Once Kobobel got out of his car, he said he saw the man lying on the ground and kicked the gun away.
“I thought it was good that I caught this jerk who’d robbed me,” Kobobel told the Chronicle. “But what I didn’t like was that this man was laying there and his life was ebbing away. I’m a Christian, and I wouldn’t want to see anybody die.”
(h/t Fark)
Editor’s note: In this story’s original headline, The Blaze referred to Kobobel as an “ex-Marine.” Kobobel is a veteran of the Marine Corps. H/t Blaze readers Leslie, Mark and Doug.

Almighty Father, whose command is over all and whose love never fails, make me aware of Thy presence and obedient to Thy will. Keep me true to my best self, guarding me against dishonesty in purpose and deed and helping me to live so that I can face my fellow Marines, my loved ones, and Thee without shame or fear. Protect my family.
Give me the will to do the work of a Marine and to accept my share of responsibilities with vigor and enthusiasm. Grant me the courage to be proficient in my daily performance. Keep me loyal and faithful to my superiors and to the duties my Country and the Marine Corps have entrusted to me. Help me to wear my uniform with dignity, and let it remind me daily of the traditions which I must uphold.

How would you like to be robbed at gunpoint, have your life threatened and struck in the head with a gun barrel ? Not to mention being fired at when the crook recognized the guy he had just robbed and threatened with death. Concealed gun permits are the best crime deterrents. Armed bad guys don’t know which good guys are also armed.

It is more like a pilot guided ground to ground kinetic missile.
I’m glad that to hear that another Marine has done something that will protect the American people. Surely he stopped at least one other person from becoming the victim of a violent crime and he has lightened the tax load on us all just a little. Assuming that the justice system works and this is waved as an act of self defense, especially if the man was shooting at his car. I only wish that someone would have the nerve to get the jump on me, rob me, then not kill me so that I could run him down and watch his thieving butt bleed out like a pig.
Was that a little harsh? Nah. Just the truth, every word.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 7:58pmI hope you’re kidding … this man should be given an award for capturing a criminal who used a gun to rob him. Next time, that robber might actually shot someone. If he did shot his weapon at the 72 year old man then it was self-defense when he used his car to disarm the man.

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 9:25pmHow could anyone think that this was a hate crime? There is no evidence to make the claim. It’s just a baseless theory. the man even said…
“I would have given him the $800 if he’d still be alive,” he said. “I didn’t want anybody to die on my account.”

OORAH Marine!!!! We all should take a lesson from you.
If you haven’t earned it, it isn’t yours. If you attempt to take it, I will attempt to re-take my belongings. One way or another, everyone (including thieves, idiots, thugs, etc.) knows right from wrong. If you chose to aim a gun at my head, you have chosen a deadly game. Do not blame me for reacting to your action.
I will never understand anyone who gives a pass to someone committing a crime. Since there are those who believe this, they can sit by passively, but that is for you! For me, I fully support the 72 year old Marine! Again, OORAH!!!

Posted on July 26, 2011 at 9:35amOnly blacks are allowed to kill and rib with no consequences? You are probably one of the crack dealers or smokers who feel like a man in Houston. He said, “the Bible says Ask and ye shall receive, here in Houston it is take and ye shall have.” Most who rob, black or white, feel like the president, you worked for your money you saved and invested, now that money should be given to this man who refused to work or save and had been given welfare, food, housing, utilities, furniture, transportation, and that isn’t enough you have to give him your money. He got the money, allright, but he didn;’t get to spend it, it cost him his lousy stealing rotten life. The man who was robbed should be rewarded for removing this bit of dung from the street without housing him for10 years and feeding him and providing him with attorneys and a jury that would have rewarded him with millions from his victim.

Posted on July 26, 2011 at 9:46amAs John Wayne said in the movie“shooter” you need to find another line of work, this one’s not paying off for you. This is a hate crime, no doubt. The robber hated to work and thought Mr. Kobobel would be an easy mark. I wonder if the liberal left will want to outlaw handgund in the hands of criminals and would be robbers??? The perp robbed a man who adjucitaded, sentenced, and executed the sentence without costing the city of Houston one cent, and he got his money back. One man in Houston said to me, The bible says, adk and ye shall receive, around Houston it is take and ye shall have. The perp got almost 900 dollars and lived almost 30 minutes to savor his ill gotten gains. Justice has been served, what would the ACLU have to say?? They will complain that they were not able to rip off a couple hundred of thousand dollars from the city to defend the robber, perhaps now they will want that amount to defend the robbers victim.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 2:16pmNo laws are broken if a victim chases after a criminal (with the possible exception of traffic violations).
More details are needed, but if the thief actually raised the weapon and fired at the victim while he was still in his car, I’d have to say that it qualifies as self-defence. And if the thief then raised the weapon a second time, there would certainly be reason to believe he was going to fire the weapon again.
This all ended in a shopping mall, so there is a good possibility that there were video cameras in place that caught the action and they could support Mr. Kobobel’ sversion of events. I certainly hope that they do.
Think of the money saved by the court systems if the killing is deemed justified.

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 4:23pmIn Texas, if someone steals an object of value from you and is fleeing with that item, and the only way you can recover your item is to use deadly force, Texas penal code says you have that right. And that is the way it should be!

Posted on July 24, 2011 at 2:16pmIn the United States of Me, not only would the robber have been run down and killed, but his immediately family would be held responsible for his actions (up to and including going to prison for his deeds). Bottom line: there would absolutely be NO law suits of any kind against someone protecting his life from harm and his business from robbery.
