KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Nearly 80 American soldiers were wounded and two Afghan civilians were killed in a Taliban truck bombing targeting an American base in eastern Afghanistan, NATO said Sunday, a stark reminder that the war in Afghanistan still rages 10 years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks against the United States.
The blast, which occurred late Saturday, shaved the facades from shops outside the Combat Outpost Sayed Abad in Wardak province and broke windows in government offices nearby, said Roshana Wardak, a former parliamentarian who runs a clinic in the nearby town of the same name. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
Eight wounded civilians were brought to Wardak’s clinic, two of them with wounds serious enough that they were sent to Kabul. She said one 3-year-old girl died of her wounds on the way to the clinic.
The attack was carried out by a Taliban suicide bomber who detonated a large bomb inside a truck carrying firewood, NATO said. It was unclear how many foreign and Afghan soldiers were serving on the base.

“Most of the force of the explosion was absorbed by the protective barrier at the outpost entrance,” NATO said, adding that the damage was repairable and that operations were continuing.
Fewer than 25 Afghan civilians were also wounded, NATO said, adding that none of the 77 injuries sustained by the Americans were life-threatening. Spokesman Maj. Russell Fox said Sunday that all the international troops at the combat outpost are American.
The truck bombing came hours after the Taliban vowed to keep fighting U.S. forces in Afghanistan until all American troops leave the country and stressed that their movement had no role in the Sept. 11 attacks.
On Sunday, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul held a memorial service to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. A military band played as American troops raised an American flag in front of about 300 assembled U.S. and Afghan officials.
Marine Corps Gen. John Allen, the commander of U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan urged those assembled to honor the memory of those who died.
“On that day we lost mothers and fathers, sons and daughters we lost people of many nations and many religions, today we remember, we honor them all,” he said.

The Afghan Foreign Minister said the attacks bound Afghans and Americans together in a “shared struggle.”
In a statement emailed to media, the Taliban accused the United States of using the Sept. 11 attacks as a pretext to invade Afghanistan and said the international community was responsible for killing thousands of Afghans during the invasion and ensuing occupation.
“Each year, 9/11 reminds the Afghans of an event in which they had no role whatsoever,” the Taliban said. “American colonialism has shed the blood of tens of thousands of miserable and innocent Afghans.”
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001, after the Taliban, who then ruled the country, refused to hand over Osama bin Laden.
The late al-Qaida leader was at the time living in Afghanistan, where the terror network had training camps from which it planned attacks against the U.S. and other countries.
“The Afghans have an endless stamina for a long war,” the statement said. “Through a countrywide uprising, the Afghans will send the Americans to the dustbin of history like they sent other empires of the past.”
The statement was issued by the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the official title used by the Taliban when they ruled the country.
The insurgent group continues to launch regular attacks and orchestrate assassination campaigns against those allied with the government. In addition to the attack in Wardak on Saturday, 10 Afghan civilians were killed in two separate roadside bombings.
Although the Taliban were swiftly driven from power by the U.S.-led coalition, they managed to use the years of the Iraq war – when America focused its military strength on the conflict against Saddam Hussein – to regroup, rearm and reorganize.
They began winning back ground lost to the international military coalition until President Barack Obama decided to send in 30,000 more troops last year to help.
Although the coalition has made some gains in the Taliban’s traditional southern strongholds, violence has not abated around the country.
The U.S. has begun withdrawing some of its 100,000 troops and will send home 33,000 by the end of next year. The international military coalition has already begun transferring security responsibilities to newly trained Afghan forces with the aim of removing all their soldiers by the end of 2014.
Bin Laden was killed in May in a raid on his house in northwestern Pakistan by helicopter-borne U.S. Navy SEALs.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 9:59pmYou know, crap like this ****** me off. I despise Obama, but really, are you guys this ignorant? Who was pressuring Obama to approve the surge? Oh yeah, guys like Beck, all the GOP, etc. I have served and continue to serve as a reservist in special warfare. I’ve been to this very base where this attack took place. Obama is not directing tactical decisions on the ground, he is following the direction of the military commanders, and ultimately they are still following the Bush doctrine. The war against Al Qaeda was won months after 9/11. MONTHS. After that it turned into this occupation / nation building crap to try and democratize Afghanistan. The war went downhill LONG before Obama, years before Obama. All Obama did was maintain the status quo. They tried to do the same thing they did in Iraq, which was to call Patreus and send in more people. Oops, Afghanistan isn’t like Iraq is it. Different people, different language, different culture. I fault Obama for not getting us out of there, but he’s not any more at fault than Bush and the GOP and the DNC. This mess is on all their heads. At this point it’s on far more “conservative” than liberal heads. How many GOP presidential candidates want to get us out of Afghanistan…? Only one that I know of.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 12:54pm@ Bioegnineer, It is actually your type who have run me out of organized Christianity. I suspect you would embrace the muslim faith, for it most certainly views “knowledge” as the greatest asset. Many who follow and followed Christ in the past have done the same. Christ explained wisdom in the most simple of terms, so not even the intellect or knowledge seeker, could construe it and determine that somehow an abundance of knowledge could be somehow represent even an ounce of wisdom. You are not alone my brother. Many such as yourself are very proud of all the knowledge they have attained pertaining to Christianity and all faiths dating back to Abraham. DO they call this theology ?? I don’t know, I am not that smart.
Report Post »What I do know is what Satan had said to Eve in the garden of Eden. I recognize I can partake from the tree of knowledge or the tree of life, an option none had until Christ had risen and had broken the chains of death. I came to appreciate the exact nature of the spirit as it empowered me to break the chains of a certain spiritual death. It was then I came to understand the wisdom of the word, not the knowledge. Life is not Jeopardy for me, having a certain prize of heaven for knowing the most. Maybe this is do to the fact that I have been blessed withe disease of addiction. I have but no choice to step in faith, seeking the spirit in all matters, and living my life according to the wisdom from with in. Seeking wisdom, not knowledge, or I will surely die

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 9:49pm@Hobbs57, I actually really appreciate your comments. I have to ask though why you’re talking about the price of tea in China? My specific comment was making fun of @Steve, who openly calls for the systematic murder of Muslims (his words) while out of the other side of this mouth quotes Bible verses. He’s a hypocrite. Your response, while interesting, seems off topic.
You said, “I suspect you would embrace the muslim faith, for it most certainly views “knowledge” as the greatest asset.”
You obviously don‘t know anything about me at all and haven’t read the history of my posts. I absolutely don’t embrace Islam. And I certainly don’t regard knowledge, or more specifically, intellectual knowledge, as the greatest asset. But I don’t dismiss it as worthless either. You are actually making my point for me. This is precisely the problem with guys like @Steve and at the heart of my disagreement with them. They do not believe in their particular flavor of Christianity because of an answer to a prayer or some other form of revelation direct from God, instead they worship their own interpretation of the Bible. Likewise they don’t hate Muslims and want to murder them because God told them too. It‘s based purely on material they’ve read on the internet, hacked together by others that have as little first-hand experience/knowledge of Islam and Muslims as they do. It’s not based on either spiritual or intellectual knowledge, just their own personal hate

Besides, I think this so called nation building we are doing is just a front. The real reason we are there is because there are a trillion dollars worth of mineral deposits in Afghanistan. Why is that never discussed? I remember reading the reports about it last summer (2010). Google it and read for yourself.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 10:58amA) Troops will do no good “on our own soil”. They cannot be used at home to fight the evils that attack us.
B) The LITHIUM deposits is what you are thinking of, and they were JUST discovered, so they are NOT the reason we are there. Not to mention, we are urging THEM to exploit the lithium FOR THEIR OWN FINANCIAL GOOD. They currently produce OPIUM. That is their cash cow. We HOPE that lithium will get them to stop depending on opium for money.
C) The Constitution of These United States is EXPLICIT in what powers it grants to the federal government. Our federal government’s SOLE PURPOSE is to PROTECT OUR RIGHTS; OUR FREEDOM AND OUR LIBERTY. It is NOT to build roads, or to hand out money, or redistribute wealth.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 9:34amNo more ground troops. Drones. planes, etc. It is ridiculous fighting a war with people who want to live in the Stone Age using their own methods.
They will not stop – thousands of years of wars and still the Middle East continues to destroy others who have climbed or are trying to climb out of the Stone Age into the current century.
They use their religion as an excuse to destroy and take power. Their religion is tied to their politics. What part of this don’t governments in the West understand?
They don’t fear words. Heck, they don’t hear words.
Get our people out of these ground wars and do what needs to be done.
Didn’t 9/11 teach us anything. They have no qualms about killing innocents. The laughed at us as they watched our people die.
While we want to protect innocents and respect life – they are on the opposite side of the coin. They look forward to death believing they will join their god and a bunch of virgins in the afterlife. Let’s set aside religion and see what the path is that is being created by those who use their religion instead of admitting they are cruel, greedy, and think that abusing women and children is somehow manly or godly.
Enough already.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 9:35amThere is no victory. These insane people have been this way since Muhammad taught them his new god allah. We would have to fight this for a hundred years and never see the end. Look at America today between black and white and look how long we have fought this.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 7:51amThe Afghans have no concept of traditional human development. Their world is one of cave man existence where they kill each other over even minor disagreements. Women are just beasts of burden to them not much different from goats and chickens. Over 95 percent don’t even know about 9/11 or even care when they find out. Even their leaders exist to satisfy personal desires, not national development or good will. An Afghan would just as soon kill you as shake your hand. Their religion is not one of love and worship but one of dominance, greed and violence. Liberal yammerings about kissy, kissy coddling of them is a wasted effort. To the Afghans, it is a sign of weakness. You can lead a mule to water but you can’t make it drink. But, you can drown the SOB.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 8:34amCowboys and Indians…
They ARE uncivilized.
And we expect them to BE civilized.
While arguments are made regarding the ‘displacement’ of native American Indians,
At least they posed a much lesser threat to others.
They had bows and arrows and tomahawks and flint knives.
THESE PEOPLE have missiles, they make IEDs, they blow up buildings and ships, they have rifles and handguns, they are trying to get their hands on nuclear weapons (if they have not already), and are a MAJOR THREAT, and have SUCCESSFULLY attacked America DRAWING FIRST BLOOD.
(BTW: I am part native American Indian, so don‘t go hatin’ on me !)
The problem is, they are taking their UNCIVIL behavior TO THE WORLD. The CIVIL world CANNOT allow that. In a CIVILIZED society, EVERYONE MUST BE CIVIL, or it fails. This is another STRONG ARGUMENT in support of Second Amendment Rights.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 7:36amHow do you spell, “set up?” Indeed, folks! The people (?) in charge are setting up our troops overseas without doubt. There is no need for this loss of AMERICAN lives. These attacks demoralize our fighting forces and are part of the ww “bottom up/top down/inside out/outside in from satan” program.
We need our troops home (USA) right now!!! screw the foreign countries we have tried to help. If they can‘t do it by now with all the help they’ve been given (remind you of any race or unions) for all these years, they are never going to “get it”: you have to do it yourselves, folks.
AMERICANS, REAL AMERICANS, come home. Fake AMERICANS, “Adios”.
PRAY ON, AMERICA! GOD HIMSELF IS getting ready to move on our behalf. Check it out!
GOD BLESS AMERICA ALL DAYS AND ESPECIALLY THIS DAY. In JESUS’ name, amen.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 8:20amYou forgot…
obama declared this “not war” is over.
Now, we are “not nation building…”
with guns and tanks and the dead, lifeless bodies of our brave men and women.
Oh, wait, I thought this is NOT A WAR.
Did somebody forget to tell our enemies?
You can put lipstick on a pig…
Of course, the presence of our weapons doesn’t mean we are at war, though.
Look at Libya where we are at “NOT WAR” THERE, TOO, and we have drones and missiles, and…

THIS IS THE WARMONGER PRESIDENT !
.
Anytime a country’s people start to rebel – BAM ! He’s right there, pointing the finger at Bush, calling him a warmonger. – Er, I meant, BAM ! He’s right there with weapons, tactical support, aid & comfort and LOTS OF YOUR AND MY MONEY to help them overthrow their government.
At least when Bush invaded other countries it was either in retaliation for an attack ON U.S. SOIL, or, it was to prevent further attacks on U.S. Soil.
Now, you can start all your TIN FOIL HAT conspiracy bull$#it if you want. BUT, he DID keep us safe, post 9/11, through the end of his Presidency. WE CANNOT SAY THAT ABOUT obama.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 7:26amthe military are not there to win. the war against islam is not being fought to win. i am not sure why but that is definately the case. if victory was the goal then afganistan would be even a worse hole than it currently is. there is more than enough fire power available to subdue all islamic countries but it will not be done until jihad is destroying our own backyards.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 11:03amI fear it is too late.
There are already BILLIONS of islamics.
The whole ‘glass parking lot’ strategy would likely create a world war.
I think our only choice is targeted attacks.
However, I do agree we are not fighting to win.
Report Post »We are fighting to get obama re-elected.
He wants the mainstream vote, who support our troops.
He also wants the socialist democrat hippie peace-nik vote, so he is ‘withdrawing’ troops.
He is straddling the fence, and we all know how well that strategy works.
He felt he ‘had to’ announce his withdrawal plans because his poll numbers were plummeting and he needed to placate his left-wing-extremists.
He didn’t let a little thing like informing the enemy get in the way of his political ambitions.

Posted on September 11, 2011 at 7:23amAn event that would not have taken place except for Obama’s invitation. He invited such action by his political decision to let the enemy know his withdrawal plans. We will suffer many more losses because of this anti-American Muslim Communist in the WhiteHouse.
